New mom looking for advice!
Hi Moms!
My baby was born on October 7th and she's an absolute doll. I am having the hardest time getting her to sleep at all at night. We are BFing, so I feed her every 2-3 hours and during the day she'll nap in between but at night she is inconsolable. Last night she cried and screamed basically from 11-3am and nothing we did helped (rocking, singing, changing the diaper, feeding, putting her in the swing, laying with us, rubbing her belly etc.) Is there anything else we can do? I'm trying to play with her a little more today instead of just letting her nap all day to hopefully regulate her days/nights a little. I know she's just an infant and I don't expect any schedule, I just don't want my poor baby to cry all night long.
Thank you! :o)

Re: New mom looking for advice!
For us it took a couple of weeks to get days/nights right...but we swaddled, used a music machine, used the aquarium. Kept the lights off in the middle of the night feedings.

The first month is rough I agree with the PP - you can help her distinguish nights and days if you keep everything dark or dimly lit for nighttime feedings/changings and keep the lights on, window shades open, regular noise level, etc going during the day. She should sort it out in a few weeks.
Congrats on the new little one!

Re: New mom looking for advice!
DS would sleep all day and would stay up all night for the first month. Eventually he got into his own routine. The first month I was sleeping during the day and staying up all night. I tried keeping him up during the day, but nothing worked. He would sleep right through it, and at night was wide awake. Eventually it straightens out on its own.

Congrats!
She is very very young and things change everyday. I wouldn't try to keep her up at all during the day. You can be more animated in the day and quieter at night though to help give her a sense of day and night. Little babies need their sleep and have no sense of day and night. It takes awhile for this to happen. At her age, babies often switch day and night. If you want, you can try to begin a basic nighttime routine. We started doing ours I think at 3 - 4 weeks. Just very basic: Diaper, PJs, nurse, swaddle, bassinet. But it was the same thing everynight and I think it helped regulate her sleep.
As far as comforting, a couple of things you didn't mention: a pacifier, although she is young and if you are breastfeeding, some babies get nipple confusion. But I gave my baby a pacifier at 3 days old and she didn't get nipple confusion. Also, I sit on an exercise ball and bounce while holding DD. I found this to be the most helpful in soothing her.

Re: New mom looking for advice!
We had the same problem...DS was confusing nights with days.
Try to establish a bedtime routine...for example bath, book, bottle...make sure the room is dark & quiet...no TV, computer, etc. During the day, keep it bright and noisy. It took DS about a week to get adjusted once we started doing this. GL!
ETA: Never keep a baby awake on purpose. Sleep begets sleep...keeping them up just makes an overtired, cranky baby.

Re: New mom looking for advice!
Thank you everyone!
Yes, we are trying to set up a routine also. I tried the pacifier and it helped for a little bit, but then she spit it out and wouldn't take it back.
I think she was very gassy last night and that contributed to the problem. Is there anything I can do for her when she's gassy?

Aww, she's not even a week old, the beginning is so rough because they have their days and nights mixed up. Only time is going to help with that. Around 3 weeks old I'd say they start to "get it"
As for the gas, you can give her mylicom which will help with the gas. Newborns are always so gassy as their little digestive systems are still adjusting.

Re: New mom looking for advice!
You can give her mylicon or gripe water for gas. You can also try laying her on her back and bicycling her legs. IT is tough in the beginning when they have their days and nights mixed up. My DC used to sleep in the bouncy seats at night and that helped them. When you BF her at night, keep everything quiet and dim. During the day, even when she sleeps, keep things bright and noisy. This will help her to distinguish night and day. Congratulations!
