Babies can definitely start teething early. 4 months is not unheard of Cole actually started about that time too and I actually had my first two teeth at 3 and 1/2 months the trick is finding what Jack likes best to sooth him Cole liked soft things like a cold wash cloth wet from the fridge or stuffed animals, other kids like teething rings b/c harder things push the teeth through faster. Orajel makes these great teething swabs (like a Q-tip filled with the gel) for easy application that I found really soothed Cole! Good luck with Jacks Teeth Debbie!

I brougth my 4 1/2 year old to the dentist today. I was told we have to brush his teeth better and start flossing. That should be fun.
Anyway, Sara is almost a year and only has 2 teeth. I see alot of teeth cming in though. She doesnt seem like she is in pain at all. SHould I just give her something to such on anyway? She is using her binky more - the hospital ones. Sooothie kind. She chews on them . Any suggestions? Thanks
One more thing . He has a functinal heart murmur and i forgot to tell the dentist. He only had a cleaning is that ok?

I forum e-mailed you but I just saw the heart murmur question. There are different types of murmurs.The biggest problems are NON-functional murmurs like a mitral valve prolapse. A FUNCTIONAL murmur is usually not an issue and does not require pre-medication for children or adults as the heart has no real problem it just has a different rhythm-some kids even grow out of it. The other type of murmur I discussed requires pre-medication for all dental work that would be invasive (may involve bleeding, extractions, cleanings...) any time there is a chance some bacteria may end up in the blood stream. It is a good idea to mention ALL types of murmurs to a dentist as everyone likes to manage their patients differently, but a functional murmur usually is not one to be concerned about so don't worry.

Thanks for the welcome! I am so proud of you! Many people do not realize how important the check up is to avoid bigger problems later on. You would be surprised how many children I see at the hospital I work part time at that have parents that have no clue what is going on in their children's mouths-its sad b/c I know the kids are in pain! Good for you for being so pro-active!

It's sad that many of us (like me  ) have terrible dentist memories  we had an old man who would YELL at us for having cavities and even yell at my mom (because of our cavities)   It was a huge practice and my 3 siblings and I hogged up the whole place when we went, lol. Just recently I asked her why we went to that practice for so long and she said because of our insurance 
So I want to make the dentist experience a VERY happy one for my kids and I want them to take their teeth VERY seriously. Every time they have candy, I say "OK what are we going to do EXTRA GOOD TONITE???" and as we brush we talk about what we ate (that we shouldnt have ) so we gotta scrub extra hard
Is it possible to brush too much or too harsh?
Please dont think we're only gonna hound you with questions. We love having experts and professionals here, but dont want you to feel like youre here only to answer questions. Actually you can ignore some of us like me who tend to babble on and on

I don't feel hounded like I said I will be asking lots of questions about babies and products... and if I can help others I would love to! As for the brushing question-If you can get the kids to brush at all GREAT don't worry about hard brushing now wait until they get a little older and have better dexterity then you should have the destist discuss proper brushing technique with them because in a way you can brush "too hard" which can lead to gum recession... but like I said they are young and childrens brushes are usually not hard bristled. As kids they usually use a scrub tecnique which is fine because they are young and can't maneuver as well as we can I would say your main concern now with them should be getting them to brush at all and if they are good about it try getting them to brush for a good amount of time there are training toothbrushes that sing a song or flash a light for the amount of time you should brush (say 1 minute) You can make a game out of it! But as for brushing too hard don't be over concerned about it yet!
