New sleeping problem....

So now Dh's alarm clock is waking the baby up. HE is in his crib in our room.

Every morning he wakes up to it and has like no ability to get back to sleep.

We talked about moving him to his room, but he's not the greatest sleeper yet and his room is RIGHT OFF the kitchen and the living room and we just cant see how we could possibly be quiet enough to not wake him ( he goes to bed at like 7pm)

SO...Dh's solution has been to sleep on the couch and last night I asked him how long he plans to do this and he said I dont know, till whenever.

It makes me feel weird that hes on the couch.

What would you do ???

Honestly, I would put him in his own room. You don't want him to get too used to having you guys in the same room. He will eventually get used to the noise from the living room/kitchen area.

I would NOT have DH sleep on the couch.

I would put the kid in his own room if you can...but my husband often sleeps with his small alarm clock under his pillow.

I think that when you share a room, everyones sleep movements and sleep noises interrupt everyone else. You might notice it more when (if) you move him into his own room, he might sleep better. Its worth a try!

Re: New sleeping problem....

We had a similar problem in that I did not want to move DS out of our room because he was still waking up 2-3 times per night. Well, we moved him anyway at 3.5 months and I camped on the couch expecting him to wake up his usual 2-3 times per night, but he didn't. He slept 8.5 hours straight that first night! I guess we were the ones keeping him up, not the other way around.

His room is also right off of our main living area/kitchen and after he falls asleep I can even run the garbage disposal and he will not wake up.

Try moving him and see what happens - it can't get any worse, right? That was my thinking.

I would move him to his room. You and DH need your time alone anyway. DS will eventually get used to the noise....how about buying a sound machine to help out?

great idea - or run a Cool Mist Humidifier - that's what we have. It drowns out everything.

My DS' room is also right next to the kitchen & LR (and it's not even a solid wall, it's a pressurized wall) and we use a sound machine. We started in our room so maybe do that and then transition for consistency? He was a light sleeper but basically slept through a superbowl party with that thing. I'd definitely try his own room though. DS slept sooo much better there (started through the night immediately after!).

I agree that the Cool Mist Humidifier drowns out everything. If you plan on moving him to his own room eventually then I would just do it know. He will get use to the noise.

ITA. I wouldn't have my DH sleeping on the couch. It doesn't seem at all fair.

Re: New sleeping problem....

Move him to his own room- and get a white noise machine. We have a white noise machine and it is a LIFE SAVER. DD sleeps through anything with that thing on.

Re: New sleeping problem....

Well Its hard to explain but his room is RIGHT there, It juts out into the living room and kitchen and we cook dinner half the time after he's in bed, He wakes up in our bedroom if I flush the toilet from the bathroom or go in to change my clothes. He's too new to the crib I think or whatever, just doesnt sleep heavily, never really has actually.

I am willing and WANT to try to put him in there, but I just cant see it working. The room is too close, and his room has french doors going into it ( its not a typical bedroom b/c we are in a weird apt) so its not even like I had a door I could close and would muffle the sounds....Its not all the way to the floor, so I guess thats the issue.

Gonna try the Alarm clock under the pillow ( it is his cell phone he uses), he says he wont hear it, but its worth a try for a bit.

I said that to him, and he is insisting it the only way. its bothering me too, but he said theres no way his room would work yet.

Im also gonna try a white noise machine.

Re: New sleeping problem....

I'd try putting him in his own room. Can you put a humidifier or a fan on for some white noise to help dull the sounds from the rest of the house.

...or can you switch rooms with him?

Re: New sleeping problem....

I think this is something you need to nip in the budd. Unless - do you plan on moving anytime soon (serious question) where you won't need to worry about his room being off the living area for much longer?

If you don't have any plans to move within the next couple of months or so - then I would def. suggest biting the bullet and putting him in his own room now.

It will make your life THAT much easier in the end. Putting it off will not make the situation any easier at all.

That's a great idea if it's doable!

I'd try to switch him too. I think it may help him to get used to being able to sleep through some of normal household noise.

But I do understand, if I shower before work, DS wakes up b/c his crib shares a wall with the shower, so I shower at night now b/c he is in a deeper sleep.Chat Icon

Its just not that easy to do..its not really doable...and we have to have some sort of life ya know. We just got him used to sleeping.....

BUt the idea of switching rooms MIGHT WORK!

Thing is that his room is smaller and has no closests , but it might work.

Will we move...yeah if we find something comparable...we are always looking.

Re: New sleeping problem....

We had a similar problem with my pager since it was waking DS up in the next room. We keep the doors open to our and his room. That pager is is SO LOUD it can wake me up out of a deep sleep (I guess that's what it's supposed to do...). Trouble is it wakes EVERYONE up.

I seriously considered sleeping on the couch when on call. DH wouldn't hear of it.

Solution: DS's door is closed when I'm on call and I cover the pager with a t-shirt to muffle that evil thing. evil evil

Maybe move DS to his own room for a trial. You might be surprised at how well he might sleep in there and how quiet you can be! Or try the T-shirt over alarm trick or make it vibrate first if you have the option... I wouldn't let DH sleep on the couch.

ITA. It's not fair to your DH to not sleep in your room although I do understand why he is opting to sleep on the couch. If DS has his own room, he needs to get used to it eventually, for your sanity as well. DS was in our room for the first 4 1/2 mos and then moved to his room when he started sleeping in his crib. He did fine from the first night. It was actually harder for me than it was for him.
