New teacher maternity leave
Hi everyone,
I have been teaching for 5 years and am looking for a job in LI.
I have a few interviews set up for positions for next year.
I am 4 1/2 weeks pregnant, and I will obviously not mention it on the interviews bc I know it will hurt me.
But if I were to get hired, how does that work for maternity leave? I am due in the beginning of January.
Any one have experience with this? Again, it is for LI schools.
TIA!

Re: New teacher maternity leave
i'm not a teacher so i can't really answer but my friend is.
I think she recently told me that you need to use sick days for maternity leave. i assume you'd still get to take maternity leave if you don't have days saved up, but it would be entirely unpaid.
congrats on being pregnant and good luck finding a job!

Re: New teacher maternity leave
I was hired in October and was signed out mid April (had my son late May). I used my sick days, then just didn't get paid. I was so worried that they wouldn't ask me back, but they did. Before getting tenure, I had my 2nd child, and took a whole year off, and still was asked back and got my tenure.
I was nervous that they wouldn't ask me back, but thankfully everything worked out!

Were those teachers asked back the following school year? That is what I am mostly afraid of.
Also, I'm guessing the leave is unpaid or you have to "borrow days" if possible?

Re: New teacher maternity leave
i don't think most LI schools let you "borrow" days, it would just be unpaid. and will you're untenured they can choose to ask you back or not for any reason at all, so you never know. it really could go either way depending on the admin

Re: New teacher maternity leave
I've been in a couple of LI districts and my experience is that it really depends on the district.
Some admins are more family oriented and would be more willing to work with a teacher who has proved herself.
Others are less tolerant of this kind of thing and would look to at least interview people to see if anything better is out there.
It really depends and you won't know until you are in the thick of it.
You can always ask on here if someone is in the district. They might be willing to FM you some info.
Congrats and good luck!

Re: New teacher maternity leave
Do yourself a huge favor and tell no one of your pregnancy until you have a few observations done and in writing. The last thing you want is for them to give you an unsatisfactory and set the framework for them not asking you back.
Trust me

Thanks so much for the input!
Still have to hear if I've been hired first, but looking to see what others' experience has been.

Re: New teacher maternity leave
Are you in NYC with a secure position? if it were me and I was I would probably hold out another year, have the baby, do my leave and look for a job next year. The idea that you might not be asked back bc of it would make me nervous, but I am a worrier like that

You could have exemplary observations and still not be asked back. My friend and I were preggo around the same time but she was 6 months further. At her tenure observation she was 8 or 9 months preggo. I was 3. I didn't tell anyone until I was about 5 or 6 months along. She couldn't hide it. I got tenure. She was asked back a 4 year and still didn't get tenure and had awesome observations each time and for the 3 yrs prior. Nothing the union could do.

I am in a charter school and my position is definitely secure here. Things have just gotten really bad and I want to get out ASAP.
I will probably end up toughing it up for next year. The plan is to work Sept-Dec. Be on maternity leave from Christmas break tp end of April, then finish up the last two months.
Here's another thing. My principal wants to move me to a testing grade (this would be the 3rd move in 5 years) and I am NOT happy about it.
He's basically doing it to replace a non-effective teacher (he's moving her to a non-testing grade- I guess he thinks we're not important , rather than just getting rid of her).
Do you think if I tell him I'm pregnant and will be gone from Jan- end of April (basically testing and test prep time) he will rethink that move?
I can't see it as being effective and helping the kids achieve high test scores, when the teacher would be gone during testing and test prep time.
Sorry, this just turned into a long vent!

Both were, but both were excessed, but for budget reasons only. We are hoping to get one back soon.
My friend's district hired someone pregnant. they said she was the best candidate and they will deal with pregnancies now or later - just about timing.

I kind of agree with this. If you have a secure position I would stay put. I don't think it would be as bad if you completed a full year and then went out your second year. But schools in LI and Westchester work the same and can use any reason or have no reason not to ask you back.
