One of my friend's child drove out of state this weekend, no paperwork given, no stopping at all when they returned.

There is really no way to catch everyone. Can you imagine what the back up would be like at the bridges?
Think of the GW Bridge on any normal day.
Now picture them stopping and questioning people.
It would be a disaster.
The only thing I can think of is tracking you via your EZPass

The stopping started in August. It was a huge reason why I wouldn't let my ex husband take my son on vacation in August.

They started with the three SI bridges (I live on SI) and then added the GW Bridge and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels. It was every 6th car

NOW they on;y really do the Holland Lincoln. and they post on their Twitter where they are going to be on any given day.

We traveled over a few of those bridges in August and saw nothing. No stopping. The traffic was shittty enough so thank god.

We go over them all the time, both my son and SO's son have to go to NJ for their custody agreements, we were never stopped but we did hear of the stopping and we started checking Twitter. They only go to one location per day, so if you didn't happen to be on the bridge on the day they were there, you were fine

I went away to Jersey in August and at the time I wasn't aware there were any restrictions for us to go to NJ from NY and back.
In fact I'm pretty sure there weren't any
So what were they stopping you for in August?

To see where you originally came from - to see if you came from a state that required quarantine. It's quite flawed as most people could just say I came from NJ.

I’m not understanding how testing while you’re away then after being back for 4 days means you don’t have to quarantine for 14 days? Taking a test only after being back for 4 days really has the same result as having taken it prior to returning.

And who is tracking all of this?

I can tell you for a fact they have national guard officers at Islip airport interviewing everybody returning from Florida and registering them in the system to quarantine. Happened to my dad three days ago.

Ok so let’s say you go to Florida. You have a hotel booked for 4 nights, you get tested on day 2 and boom! You’re positive. Now what?

Do you fly home with a mask and maybe expose people on the way then quarantine in your house?

Do you become a squatter in your hotel room for 14 days that you only have booked for 2 more nights? What if they can’t accommodate you? What if you can’t afford 12 more nights? Do you go to a shelter?

This really seems kinda nuts.

Or you drive back. That’s the risk you take if you choose to travel in the middle of a pandemic.

They weren't stopping people coming from Jersey, they were stopping every 6th car to see if they had traveled from a state that was on the travel ban list.

I was saying we go to Jersey because we do, my ex husband wanted to take my son to a state on the travel ban list.

ETA: They are at the crossings because obviously that is how people get to NY from other states, not just NJ

I have 2 family members come to stay with me from Florida at different times. Both flew up. One received a call the next day and everyday for the next 13 days to ask if they were quarantining, if they had symptons etc.
The other received nothing. He quarantined himself for 14 days but no one was tracking it.

I feel like it is pretty random and they don't have enough people to call every person who flies into NY let alone drives in.

As another poster said, I do think there is a fine if you test positive and they figure out you traveled to another state and didn't follow the guidelines when you arrived back.

Bunch of BS to scare people. My family has been back and forth to Florida and Alabama since the Summer. Flying and driving...no stops, no monitoring, no paperwork.

I am not sure why you think it's "BS." These are rules that have been established to keep the numbers in NY low. If I were traveling somewhere that required quarantining upon return, or testing prior to returning and after arriving, I would do so. Just because you don't get pulled over every time you drive drunk doesn't mean you aren't breaking the law or putting others at risk....

Being drunk and not sick and having to test and quarantine are 2 different things.

While most of us follow the rules and laws, this is ridiculous and people are falling for a lot of b.s. and fear mongering.

I watch people walk by my house everyday with masks on while walking all by themselves with no one around.

Just because they say wear a mask you need to use some common sense which has been lost a long time ago.

Traveling out of state to an area that has a much higher infection rate certainly puts you at more risk than staying in NY where the numbers were still low. I don't think asking people to take extra precautions after doing so is ridiculous or fear mongering. We traveled extensively over the summer. We spent a lot of time in Bermuda where they require a prearrival covid test, a test at the airport upon arrival and tests on day 4, 8 and 14. I thought it was fantastic that they were so organized about testing and contact tracing. Clearly they are a very small country which allows them the ability to do this but they have now been downgraded by the CDC to a NO RISK country. If we could be so organized with testing and people accepted the responsibility of getting tested our numbers probably would not be rising again. People make it out like this test is the end of the world. It takes 5 seconds and is pain free. Same as wearing a mask! Who cares about having to wear a mask? It's not taking away our freedom and if older people want to wear a mask while they're alone in the shower who cares!!!!

You missed my point. I get the testing and wearing masks but some people are in so much fear from what is being thrown at them that they literally wear a mask by themselves in cars and taking walks. The mental state of people is suffering as many are either just naïve or are total rule followers or don't have the mental capability to understand all of this.

The state website says the following (very confusing).

For any traveler to New York State from a noncontiguous state, US territory or CDC level 2 or level 3 country, the new guidelines for travelers to test-out of the mandatory 14-day quarantine are below:

For travelers who were out-of-state for more than 24 hours:
Travelers must obtain a test within three days of departure, prior to arrival in New York.
The traveler must, upon arrival in New York, quarantine for three days.
On day 4 of their quarantine, the traveler must obtain another COVID test. If both tests comes back negative, the traveler may exit quarantine early upon receipt of the second negative diagnostic test.

I just saw this. Guess we are only sticking to contiguous states! Wish Vt would let us in though. Have been to every state in the NE these past few months except there!

Lol - Vermont is the only non-contiguous state that we can visit and be able to return to school after. It’s on the daily checklist. But yes, it’s difficult to get in there.

I miss regular travel. We went to Hershey this past weekend and it was wonderful to get away for a couple of days.

Actually, flouting the mask and quarantine rules are EXACTLY like driving drunk. It's selfish, and it can kill people, but it may not.

Because an asymptomatic person can bring covid into the state, and a drunk person can kill someone on the road, we ask people to quarantine/test when the travel and to refrain from driving when they are drunk.

People who think they are above being inconvenienced by these requests are selfish, and could har or kill people. Whether they actually do or not is a function of luck and nothing more.

Its BS because the bare minimum of people are actually being monitored. No one is gonna show up at your door. Its all lies to keep people in check and scared. And i know this because i have 12 people in my family who have traveled back and forth and two are airplane company employees. Maybe you'll get a call or text but no one is gonna make sure your home.

Maybe you'll get a call or text but no one is gonna make sure your home.

So you are saying the enforcement is BS? Yes, that I agree with. No one is enforcing anything. I just think asking people to test when coming back from an area that has a high rate of COVID is a good idea and it's really very little inconvenience. Asking someone to quarantine for two weeks is a major inconvenience but a three day quarantine followed by a negative test really isn't asking much.
