If this is really about the safety of our children how come they don't check the vaccine records of teachers, bus drivers, coaches etc? It would make more sense to start there.

I'm not sure about bus drivers, but teachers and coaches do have to be vaccinated. Every school I ever worked at required it, medical documents, vaccinations, etc.

This Is absolutely NOT true.

I work for the NYC DOE and no one has ever asked me for my immunization records. I came from a school on Long Island were you needed a yearly physical and if it was not handed in on the anniversary date you were terminated. In NYC I have never been asked for as much as a TB test.

Question... I know a few families in our district who have a religious exemption. One of them my kid is friendly with in school.

Will their exemption be "grandfathered" being have had one for many years? Or will they have to vaccinate? They have a bunch of kids, the youngest in Kindergarten. Will they be asked to leave the school come September?

I haven't talked to them, more of a cordial type relationship, not sure I want to even bring up but now am curious Chat Icon

I don't believe they will be grandfathered in. According to the letter from my school district they have until a certain date to get their first round of shots for the start of the new school year (I think it was 14 days before school started) then they need to show they have follow up appointments for the rest

That’s right, they won’t be grandfathered. Everyone will need to catch up to the vaccine schedule regardless if u have never vaccinated before. All students must be in full compliance regarding immunization by the first day of school, if not, schools will u give a 14 day grace period to complete the required immunizations. Then if this doesn’t happen and the 14 days are up, they’ll give u a 30 day extension with a written request as long as u have a dr’s letter saying the extended time is needed to complete the series of immunization. They do not care if u have to catch up with 1 shot or 20, they’re giving u a very short amount of time to do so. Things will change for medical exemptions as well, they’re already extremely difficult to get even if u “qualify”. With their new plan, u’ll need to be almost dead to obtain a medical exception. A lot of families that are being affected by this are either moving to another state or choosing to homeschool.

Thanks for the reply, I was generally curious. From the little I know about the mother my guess is she would home school then. Her 2 oldest had some vaccinations but #3, 4, etc none..

I get that the religious exemptions are gone and how this impacts people in the public school system. I am unclear how this will affect children in a private school system. I am unfamiliar with private schools, whether they be religiously affiliated or not. Do they require immunization records? Given the new law, could people pull their children out of public school and just put them into a private, non-NYS funded school to "skirt" around it?

My guess is that this would be difficult to find. Even religious schools often receive public funding.

It affects every school regardless of funding- edited to add that college kids are not included.

That’s right. If a school is licensed to provide education, they need to adhere to this law, and considering how much they’d have to lose, they’ll be very strict to follow the rules.

There’s no metion regarding colleges and let’s pray it stays that way!!!
