Re: New Yorker Magazine Cover
Posted by ilt1221 I think people have already formed an opinion. The people that read the NYorker are savvy politically aware individuals. Honestly this just depicts what some people's concerns are with him thats why its satire but yes over the top. Although I have seen similar cartoon editorials in the local paper.
ITA. I think that there have been way worse depictions of GWB during the past 7 years, and although I am the first to come out against his ridiculous actions as president, it has been done on a much broader scale and with less apology.

I thought it was amusing. I "got" the joke.
And I am an Obama supporter.
Clearly, I'm in the minority.
ETA: I think what did it for me was the fist punch thing. To me that was the big indicator that it was a joke. I thought it was funny too. And it shows me that they are reaching for ANYTHING to make him look bad. The fact that they had to take every little piece of controvery and put it into one cartoon to try and make a statement says more to me than the cartoon itself.

Very true.
I understood where they were going with it and took it for what it was.

Too far IMO. I would say the same if it was John McCain.

I understand the concept of political satire, but I think this really just went too far. People who already believed this stuff about the Obamas are now going to believe it even more.
Agreed! I think the New Yorker went waaay overboard with this one - highly inappropriate and I think this is really going to have a large impact on the election.

Re: New Yorker Magazine Cover
DH has a family member who believes all this nonsense - that Obama is a terrorist b/c of his middle name, he really hates America b/c he doesn't wear a flag pin, etc. We have sent them numerous articles, links to Snopes and everything to show them they are mis-informed. Doesn't matter. Guaranteed the next time we speak to this person they will use this to try to "prove" their point. I feel bad for his campaign b/c regardless of how much they try to downplay it they are going to have to work hard to overcome this image.

Re: New Yorker Magazine Cover
they just made things easier for the "lazy" voter.
Sadly, I'd say about 35% of the voters will vote based on informed decisions.
The other 65% will base their vote on something that requires no thought and is irrelevant to the grand scheme of things.
I am not an informed voter, but will be one by election day.
I'm not saying I WANT Obama to lose, per se, because I just don't know yet.
I just don't think he WILL win, because there are too many "lazy" reasons not to vote for him
1. he's African American 2. His middle name is Hussein 3. The conception that he is Muslim 4. His name rhymes with Osama 5. Now, this new New Yorker picture

Re: New Yorker Magazine Cover
I saw this yesterday and was completely shocked that such a reputable magazine would use a cartoon like this to counter the "right"

Re: New Yorker Magazine Cover
Personally, I think the cartoon is brilliant. However, i think it was terribly irresponsible of The New Yorker to place it on its cover knowing the widespread publicity it would garner. Like a PP said, lazy voters and Obama haters will use any excuse...
