newborn clothes?

So i just went through all the clothes I got for my shower. I got a ton of 0-3 and 3-6 month stuff but very few newborn clothes (6 outfits and a pack or so of onesies). DD is 5.25 lbs now and estimated to be between 6.5-8lbs depending on the last 6 weeks and how under control my sugar is. So, I am planning to buy stuff this weekend but I don't know how much to buy. I definitely need stuff for sleep, but I'm not sure how much else. what do you think?

Also, I got over 20 bibs. do i really need this many? should I return some?

TIA!!!

Re: newborn clothes?

a lot of people don't buy NB cuz a lot of baby's wont fit into it. it's a very small size.

I would keep the bibs.... I got a lot too, and I am keeping them - they will get stained beyond recognition, and at some point u will want to throw one or 5 out...

Re: newborn clothes?

Return some of the bibs- really 10-12 is enough for now. Keep in mind with the bibs that there are different sizes so keep some of different sizes. I would pick up a couple of more outfits, maybe only like 2 or 3 more and I think you're good on onesies. Also keep in mind that you will probably receive gifts after the baby is born also. It really comes down to how often do you want to do laundry. While some babies spit up, not all of them do. So you may have the same outfit on all day.

You really don't know how big the baby will be until he/she is here. You could also have a very long baby. I would wash a couple of outfits and keep the tags on the others to be honest. When we brough DS home he grew out of the NB so fast (he was 7/12 and 19 inches). And, I only used the same couple of PJs and onsies. You could always get more afterwards. The 3-6 don't last very long as well.

Believe it or not bibs do come in handy and get stained as DC gets older. Maybe hold on to the bibs.

IMO

Re: newborn clothes?

Thanks for the advice. Just a couple mroe questions to clarify. The newborn outfits I have are long sleeve onesies with pants and the onesies I have are short sleeve (maybe one or 2 long sleeve). I do have 2 of those one size fits all sleep gown, 2 swaddle mes, a miracle blanket, and a wearable blanket, but i figure I need some feeted pjs. How many should I get?

Re: newborn clothes?

our family is tall and has babies that are roughly 8 lbs.... we usually start them off in 3 mo size, and they quickly then progress to 6 mo size.....

Re: newborn clothes?

My son was almost 10lb at birth so he grew out of NB quickly.

I would say you want 5 feeted pjs to start, dont go nuts because you will get gifts after the baby is born and generally people buy clothes.

I would say keep the bibs. Unless you plan to do laundry alot, I have about 30 bibs and I use 90% of them. Its great because I dont have to do laundry every day, and if one gets really gross and stained I can toss it.

Re: newborn clothes?

I would return the bibs and buy maybe 3-4 newborn sleepers.

Re: newborn clothes?

I wish I had not listened to all the people who told me not to buy any newborn clothes. If the baby is small, you can't really just improvise with the 0-3 clothes. The shoulders will not even stay on and your baby will be cold, especially b/c smaller babies get cold. My baby is now 9.5 pounds and a lot of newborn clothes still fit. The only way I would skip newborn sizes if I knew I was having a very big baby.

I have well over 20 bibs and for a baby with reflux, this was not a waste. It is nice to have extras to keep in the diaper bag, too.

Re: newborn clothes?

Like pp I listened to everyone and figured I didn't need newborn clothes. My son was born 6lbs 6.5oz. My mom had to run out and by NB clothes while I was in the hospital. Ds is 4 weeks old and still wearing NB clothes. I think he will move up to 0-3 months in about a week. I have 2 outfits and about 8 sleepers. We have to do wash 2x a week. But that's because ds tends to pee on himself at least once a day Chat Icon .

Re: newborn clothes?

Like the others said, it totally depends on the size of your baby. My DD was 7lbs. 14 oz. & 21 inches long & she truly wore NB clothes maybe for a week or so & then she was right into the 0-3.

Not sure you'll be needing all those swaddle me's, etc. We used the miracle blanket (& had 1 spare) & that was perfect.

You can never go wrong w/ sleepers or onesies.

TRULY don't buy anything else. We got maybe a few outfits (maybe 10 total) at my shower & a few onesies & when she was born, we got more clothes than we knew what to do with. DON'T rip off all the tags until you know she is going to wear them (to wash when she's here, etc.) We returned so many outfits that she never even got to wear. They grow so quick.

Also in the beginning its all about comfort & warmth.
