Night Time and Toddler (12-18 months of BTDT) HELP!
Please, for those of you whose toddlers NORMALLY put themselves to sleep, mainly for naps and SOMETIMES at night (DS still has a nighttime bottle at bedtime and SOMETIMES falls asleep, he is 15 months old).
If your DC normally puts themselves to sleep but sometimes cry when you lay them down (we did CIO), on the nights they cry, do you go in and get them? How long is too long for crying? DS just learned to call for me and it's breaking my heart on his bad nights going to sleep. What do you do? Go in? Don't go in? How long do you wait before you do go in to get them, if at all? Please give me some advice. I feel like such a TERRIBLE mommy that he is up there crying while I type this.... breaks my heart. But he has never been a baby that lets me rock him to sleep or soothe him to sleep.........
Long night here and hubby isn't home to share in it with me, I'm all alone here...

Re: Night Time and Toddler (12-18 months of BTDT) HELP!
My son sometimes cries when I put him down - sometimes he doesn't. He is 12 months.
Once he is put down - I never go back in. If he sees me he's so much worse. That's what works for us - I know other kids are different.
Does he normally go to bed this late? That could have something to do with it maybe?

How long do you let him cry before you know he's not going to go to sleep? I put him down about 9 (I'm an hour behind east coast time, I'm in St. Louis now). He goes to bed usually between 8:30 and 9 usually. So, he wasn't that much later. It's just breaking my heart.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I would not go in. I let DH CIO. I would just let him cry. As long as you maintain a bedtime routine he will realize that it's bedtime. If you go in and get him he will realize he only has to cry to get you to come in.
How long is too long? In my opinion, there is no such thing. He will eventually fall asleep.
GOOD LUCK and keep your head up.

Thanks so much. It's just so hard now that he can call "MOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYY". It is killing me and I just question sometimes if it's the right thing to do or not, ya know?

I was in your boat tonight. DS always puts himself to sleep for naps and bed time.
I do not go in. Yes, its hard. It's very hard, but, if I go in, it gets worse. I have to stick to my guns. I will stand outside his door or sit in my room (he's right next door). I sit and pray that he falls asleep. Tonight was at least 20 mins. before he fell asleep.

I never go back in - unless I hear him whack his head or he's at the point of hysterics where he can't breathe. It hardly ever happens.
The longest he's cried is about an hour and 15 mins.

Although I'm so far away, and alone, it's nice to know I'm not the only one in this boat that feels like it's sinking sometimes. Do you give your DS a bottle at night? Or are they bottle free? I don't know what in the world I'm going to do when I need to take that bottle away.

Was that hour and 15 minutes full out crying or just minor fussing???
