Nikon d90...no clue
So we got the camera for xmas...and wow...that quick reference guide You need a second degree to figure it out. Is it really difficult to use? I just want to learn how to take quick pics...one after another. And...does it take black & white photos? Im excited but so confused

You can convert to B&W in your camera. I haven't checked out the quick reference guide as I'm still going through the manual. Looks like we'll all be learning together!

I'm lost with it too - but I never have time to really sit and look at the manual. This week we are taking a long car trip and I will be reading away. I'm also going to take the Nikon course in March.

We should all learn together. I need to be forced to read the manual on this camera so I can use it for all it's worth.

I am going to try and take the course in March too - there is also a June one. It's a weekend course, Sat and Sun - both 8 hour days, so I have to see about a babysitter since DH works weekends! I have an older D50, but I am still learning the ways!
The course is in NYC given through Nikon.

Re: Nikon d90...no clue
Start slowly. Keep the reference manual handy. Get a feel for the camera. Read about it. Consider a class. Little by little, you will learn the camera. Very few people learn every single feature of either their cameras or programs like photoshop. You will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your camera anyway!!!!!!!!
I cannot wait to see all the LIF photos from people's new cameras!!!

Re: Nikon d90...no clue
I just checked the site and am VERY interested...I guess in the Basics course, since I'm still on auto Would this course be good for any Nikon SLR? I Have the d40 and my SIL has the d90-- could we both take it?
Sorry to hijack the thread!

I haven't taken that course but yes from the description, it doesn't look D90 specific. I took a basic photography class - a multi week course through our school district (~$60-70). They're sending out the booklets for the next one this week or next.
You need to read the manual/watch the DVD to really learn the features of your particular camera. We can all teach each other but I don't think it's a substitute (unfortunately).

Darn you Barb, not the answer I wanted I want them to teach me EVERYTHING in a 1-day course so I don't have to do this when I read my manual.

Re: Nikon d90...no clue
I have the 80 & I am totally learning as I go. You can always just put it on auto for now. I can't wait to learn more about shutter speads and do things manually.
