No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
By Michael Kahn, Reuters
LONDON (Feb. 4) - A vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella does not cause autism, according to the largest study yet showing there is no evidence linking the childhood shot to the development disorder. The study, published on Tuesday in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, found no evidence of any abnormal biological response from the shot that could point to a link between the vaccine and autism. “This study really supports the view these are safe vaccines,” said David Brown, a researcher at Britain’s Health Protection Agency who worked on the study. “The evidence is now so solid there really isn’t a need for further studies here.” In 1998, Dr. Andrew Wakefield of Royal Free Hospital in London and colleagues sparked a fierce worldwide debate among scientists and a health scare by suggesting the MMR jab caused autism. Outbreaks of all three diseases followed. Autism is marked by a variety of difficulties in social interaction and behavior, from the awkwardness of Asperger syndrome to severely debilitating repetitive behaviors and an inability to speak. The British study looked at nearly 100 autistic children, a group of 52 with learning difficulties and 90 who were developing normally. All the volunteers chosen from a sample of 57,000 children in southern England had received an MMR vaccination but not everybody got both doses, said Gillian Baird, a pediatrician at the Newcomen Centre for Child Development, who led the study. The researchers took blood samples from the children and found no abnormal immune response in any of them marked by higher antibody levels or presence of a measles virus still left in the body from the shot, Baird added. Wakefield, whose research has been widely discredited, had pointed to these two factors as a way to explain the link but the latest findings do not back up that case, Baird said. Wakefield said in a newspaper interview last year he believed it was biologically plausible the shot could cause autism. “There was no difference across any of the groups no matter how you cut them up,” Baird said in a telephone interview. “The response to the MMR vaccine was the same in every group.” Before Wakefield’s study, more than 90 percent of British children received the vaccination, a figure that dropped to 80 percent before recovering to a current 85 percent, according to government figures. Baird said she hoped the findings, along with a U.S. study last week showing that a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal did not cause autism, would bolster confidence in the MMR shot. “It is a big study and we hope people can have confidence in the MMR shot again,” Baird said in a telephone interview. “Measles has come back again because people have stopped immunizing their children.”

Re: No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
Another great article was in a recent people magazine where a family had 6 autistic children the mother had kids from 2 different men and all had some form of Autism-very interesting-she appeared to be the only common link-genetics perhaps? I hope they find a cause soon this is a scary problem -my heart goes out to all families affected.

Good study....
I still am pessimistic b/c 100 kids does not equal a sample to me, but the evidence is nice and Im so glad studies continue.

Re: No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
Quick question - are the vaccines in Europe made and processed and stored and given the exact same way they are in the US?

I believe they are...
ETA - the original vaccine scare originated in Britain - so its all coming from the same place...

I agree
I understand, but don't forget - the "vaccine" scare was based on no research... so this is still more reliable...

well I think it was actually based on Andrew Wakefields study which I know did have a study group but it was very SMALL that I agree with you on.
I think the studies should continue until theres no doubt's in everyones mind.

I know it's based on "no research" but there are SO MANY stories out there of moms who say they saw the change in their kids almost IMMEDIATELY after the MMR vaccination.
So I pose a hypothetical question to you, Liza:
If you were to give Cailen the vaccine and then (God forbid) he was diagnosed as Autistic would you still stand by your belief that there is no tie at all?
I honestly want to know.

Re: No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
I agree...this study is not a GREAT study. Does the governmenet really think they will say there is a link?? No, there would be too many lawsuits and no one would vaccinate their child. I have worked with autistic kids years ago, and have had parents swear that the vaccine did have some cause.
So, I am still skeptical and that is why .

Re: No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
I just has Paige vaccinated with the MMR shot. At first i wanted to wait at least another 6 months but the doctor told me that he doesnt believe it causes autism and that autism usually shows signs between 12 and 18 months - which is when the MMR shot is usally given.
Believe you me, I am super paranoid now. I keep making sure she is okay. I just didnt want to risk her getting sick with anything at all and then giving it to someone. I would never be able to forgive myself if godforbid she got a pregnant mommy or another kid sick.
Thanks for posting this Liza!!!

ITA... once they can prove what is NOT causing it, then they can focus their attention away from that and start looking into other possible causes.

Re: No Autism Link to Common Child Vaccine
I'm glad they are continuing the research. But no study will be conclusive in disproving a link between vaccines and autism until the actual cause is found. The scare was just too widespread.
It will boost confidence in the vaccine for more people though.
