For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
How are you planning on handling the vaccinations? Are you delaying them? Which ones? For how long? Is there a solution?

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
I am concerned. I have listened to both sides...I am waiting until my DD is 2 and then I will give her the MMR but split up - hopefully I will find a ped who does that.
I dont think I will give her the chicken pox vaccination until I have no choice and she is going to school.
I have given her the other vaccinations - HTAP on time.
I do not give the flu shot.
The only solution is to move to a deserted island and live in a bubble which I have considered many, many times

same here. Is it now mandatory to have the chicken pox vaccine. Is it one or 2 shots?? It seems like there are more vaccines given now then when we were young

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
DS just had his MMR and Chicken Pox vaccine at his 1 year well visit. I was torn as to what to do, but followed the advice of my ped, who has a daughter a little older than DS.

There are considerably more vaccinations.
I also plan to delay as many as possible, and also to split up the "stacked" doses (DTP, MMR, etc). I have already had words with my Ped b/c they want to do the Hep B and I personally do not see the point in such a small infant. He is only 2 weeks for goodness sake!
If anyone has a Ped that is "vaccination sensitive" I'd love to know who you use, so that I do not need to have the argument at every visit.....

MY ped will let you split them. I delayed the MMR a while and then split the shots.

Chicken Pox vaccine is mandatory now when they enter school. There are 2 vaccines I believe.

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
I had concerns, but having a girl makes me worry about autism less, since they are statistically less likely to have it.
I am a teacher and I work with lots of kids from other countries who come to school before they are fully caught up on their vaccines- they're allowed to attend for quite a while before the school begins sending them home. And between DH and I, we've had students come to school with mumps, whopping cough and chicken pox. I don't know how likely it is to "carry" these things but I feel better knowing DD is vaccinated. So many of my kids come to school sick, so I also always get a flu shot (I am asthmatic too) and DD will get one as well.

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
I have read extensively on this. The only shot possibly linked to autism is the MMR, which I will not give to DS until later and the shot will be split up. My dr. also does not use mercury or thermisol in any of his shots. However, it still does not sit well with me the amount of new shots our children are getting opposed to what we got when we were children. I declined the Hep shot at the hospital when DS was born. I did not see the reason for him to get this. I was going to delay DS starting his shots until he was 3 or 4 months old, but yesterday at DS's 2 mo. visit I let the dr. give him one shot, the Hib which is important b/c it helps protect them against infections that can lead to meningitis, etc. I take DS out all over with me. And after the idiot who got on the plane with TB, I can't trust anyone else has the brains to stay out of the stores with diseases.
I discussed with my dr. we are only going to do 1 shot a month. It will take him longer, but at least if he has a reaction to a shot I will know rather than giving him 3 or 4 at once and having no idea. DS did not have any reaction what so ever to the Hib shot, the dr. assured me it is actually one of the "better" shots for babies that has the fewest reactions and side effects. I also do not intend on giving DS the rotovirus vaccine b/c of the recent studies done on it and will not be giving him the flu vaccine or chicken pox vaccine. I might change my mind in the future, but will not be giving him these as an infant. There are other shots that are more important and I do not want to over load him.
It is important that you find a ped. that LISTENS to you and WORKS with you. I refuse to let anyone tell me, including a dr., what I HAVE to do. God forbid something happened, the dr. is not going to be the one taking care of your DC 24/7. You do what is best for you and what you think is right!
Here is some info on the Hib shot: Why does my baby need the Hib vaccine? The Hib vaccine protects your child from the Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteria, which can cause epiglottitis (severe swelling in the throat that makes it hard to breathe), a serious form of pneumonia, and a disease called bacterial meningitis. Meningitis is an infection of the membrane covering the brain and spinal cord that can lead to lasting brain damage and deafness in young children, and can sometimes be fatal. Haemophilus influenzae can also cause serious joint and skin infections as well as other less common infections.
Before the Hib vaccine was approved for young children in 1990, Hib was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in U.S. infants and children. Every year, roughly 20,000 people were infected with Hib, and two-thirds of those patients developed meningitis.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), before the vaccine was made available, one out of every 200 U.S. children under 5 got an invasive Hib disease, and 600 children died of meningitis every year. Children who survived often suffered from deafness, seizures, or mental retardation. Since the vaccine was introduced in 1987, the rate of Hib infection has fallen 98 percent. Among children under 5, cases of invasive Hib have declined 99 percent.
It's especially important that your child receive this vaccine on schedule, because the diseases it protects against tend to strike children between the ages of 2 months and 2 years.
ETA: I would never want to harm another child either, so before DS attends pre-school or elementary school, he will and should be fully vaccinated. I have a little more leniency (sp?) b/c DS will not be going to day care. Others dont have this option.

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
I'm delaying and splitting the MMR. Even though there's "no proven link" between the shot and autism there are still too many unanswered questions about it for me to feel comfortable shooting my son up with it.
I'm planning on vaxing for measels at 15 months and delaying the other two. For me, the risks of mumps and rubella, both of which are fairly minor diseases for children, don't out-wiegh the risks of the MMR vaccine.
I think a "mandatory" vaccine for chicken pox is absolutely ridiculous. I have no problem vaxing for dangerous illnesses, but chicken pox? You've got to be kidding me!!

So far I have 3 on my list. A few of my non-vaccinating friends use them and say they are understanding and won't push the issue.

I don't have a choice since she will be attending daycare.
Same here - and I agree that the chicken pox vacc is so ridiculous. Who has ever died from chicken pox????
I feel I'm always posting the same thing on these threads, and didn't want people to be like there she goes again, but heres my opinion:
autism is more genetic than anything else, and research is really pointiing in the direction.
There is nothing definitive when it comes to vacc and autism. The reason people believe that vacc caused their children's autism is because developmentally, autism manifests at the time vacc are given, plain and simple.
There are 2 types of autism - one where the child never develops skills or language, and one where a child seems to be developing typically, and then stops, or loses skills. The second is where parents blame the vaccines more... we don;t know why it happens, but many proefssionals do not believe in the link. If I work with a parent who beleieves this though, I dont go there, but honestly, I have seen parents with more than one child with autism, and not vaccinating their other children after the 1st developed autism, and the siblings still developed autism.... so there goes the vacc theory...
I have already gotten Cailen vaccinated last week - I was more nervous about the fevers than anything else - he is completely fine. I will try and break up the MMR if his daycare will let him - but thats because I had a horrible reaction to the MMR when I was young - got really sick. I hate seeing him sick, but I don't believe it will affect his development....
So, this is what I believe....

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations
I also believe that Austism ahas to do with the immune system as well, many children with Autism have allergies to EVERYTHING, and are sick a lot. I have worked with them for many years and dont believe it is just "genetic". I think there are many reasons and environtmental as well. I have had many parents swear that the shots is what caused it, which I know is NOT proven to be true, but I guess we will never know. I worked with this population for a long time and I too will break up the MMR and prolong it as long as possible as well as the chicken pox vaccine , which I think is ridulculous.

I use Dr. Martocci in Garden City and is extremely understanding and knowledgeable about vaccines. He and I developed our own vaccination schedule. If you would like his number and address let me know.
