So pissed! I was talking to a friend who just had a baby, and she said that most insurance companies now cover free medela electric pumps. I looked into my insurance (GHI), and got SO excited when I saw that it is indeed covered. Until, I noticed the little blurb on the bottom that said everyone in the plain is covered EXCEPT NYC employees (teachers, FDNY, NYPD, etc.)... Anyone else know this?

Seriously?! Dh and I have ghi and he is Nypd. I was looking forward to getting a free pump!! I really hope this isn't true! That would be BS and don't understand why!

yeah i went onto the ghi site and signed in, and then I saw that there were a few companies that you can get breast pumps through, so I e-mailed them and they all asked for my Id #, then said I wasn't covered because NYC employees are not covered through any company for a free pump. Sucks because they are like $300!

I could have sworn that everyone has to be covered now due to the new health care laws. Anyone else hear that?!

Yeah, I'm pretty certain that's what my understanding was as well. I would call and speak with someone and ask WHY there is an exception, it doesn't really make any sense to me.

There is a new law that allows them as a tax exemption (so you get refunded such that you can them from your salary pre-tax like a medical expense).

I've never heard of free pumps yet, but who knows?

there are a lot of exceptions here.

my company is self funded insurance = we dont get

i did it through DW's and they sent it early (november) but then i got a bill because it wasnt billed thru my primary first... so they are rebilling... but we have since (2/1) dropped DW's insurance... so who knows what will happen.

ETA- If I have to pay i'm going to be mad bc i would have gotten it at BRU for cheaper w/ a coupon!

Yep, unfortunately. DH's cousin is a NYC teacher and she had a pump on her registry. When I told her about it possibly being covered by insurance, she told me about it not being covered for her.

yeah this is what I will probably have to do. Just stinks because it's very expensive and I feel like nobody will buy it

If the plan existed prior to ACA, the ins company is exempt.

Many NYC and NYS plans are grandfathered- the plans are given an exemption because the policy predates the new laws. Check out mommygear.com they often have good sales on pumps.

My husband is NYPD with GHI, and they basically told us to go screw when he called. He tried his union as well, no luck.

Update: I have found out that you could go through your blue cross blue shield hospital insurance- Some people online have reported that it works. Might be worth a shot!

Apparently if you give that insurance info to the people at Babies R us, you can get the medela pump in style

Go to ourperfectbaby.com and send an email to the address they have on the website. I basically just gave them my bluecross blueshield insurance ID #, name and DOB and they e-mailed me back just now saying the pump in style is totally free!!! They will ship it out in a few days, but you need to e-mail a doctor's note to them within a week of them sending out your pump

Re: no breastpump coverage- nyc doe

I have BC/BS and went through Edgepark.com to order a pump. As long as my deductible for the year is met, its covered. I got it 3 days after I ordered it and will only have a $45 copay for the Medela Pump in style advanced kit.

ETA: Sorry, I just realized that this post was specific for DOE employees. Chat Icon

HUGE thanks to the ladies who posted!! I just went to our perfect baby, and they got back to me in minutes!! Basically, if I can get a prescription from my doctor, I can get it covered. The basic Medela starter is free, but the pump in style (which is what I wanted) will only be $80. Nice savings!!

yep! I think im going to just go with the free one because there aren't many differences between the two at all! Both are double electric pumps, and that's all I wanted. As long as it's double, it's fine with me :)

I love that it's not a rental either! I am probably going to order it in a few months, since I'm only like 6 weeks. But you can order it whenever you want, as long as you get the dr's note!
