No Carbs - Is this Possible?
My husband and I decided to give up bread, pasta, rice and potatoes for Lent. Is this possible? What can I add to meals that can "substitute" the carbs.

quinoa - you can make it as the quinoa or they make a pasta form - not sure if that's cheating.
Can you have brown rice? Couscous is pasta so that's out.
You can make lettece wraps instead of bread sandwiches.
All potatoes or just white ones? Sweet potatoes?
You can make spagetti squash.

Quinoa, I love my husband not so much. But if I can find it in pasta form, that could work.
Can't have any type of rice or potato.
We did this last year, but didn't make it until the end.
I just looked up spaghetti squash, looks interesting will definitely try it. Thanks for the input.

You can use a roasted portabella mushroom as a "bread" for under a burger.
You could also fill one with some chicken, roasted bell peppers and then melt some cheese on top.
Chili or beans, lentils.

You might want to look for some Atkins diet books and websites. I don't know if it will be very helpful, but I know the Atkins diet is a carb-free diet, so they should have some suggestions.

mashed cauliflower is a popular substitute for mashed potatoes.
additional veggies or a salad can fill the carb spot on your plate.

While very healthy I don't think quinoa is low carb.

Re: No Carbs - Is this Possible?
This is possible to substitute foods but not without adding carbohydrate. I am gluten free and eat NO wheat and very little potatoes. Ancient harvest makes pasta that is quinoa and corn it is good if you eat it right away. You can have any variety of squash. Polenta/grits is also wonderful you can use it for savory side dishes for dinner or you can make a sweet version for breakfast.

Re: No Carbs - Is this Possible?
I don't eat pasta, rice, potatoes, bread or most carbs (I am diabtetic- carbs turn to sugar) but I feel 100% better eating this way
so I think it's very possible- I eat veggies, salad and protein every night
salad for lunch
and egg whites and cheese for breakfast
I do eat protein bars as snacks- which have carbs- but they are good for me

Re: No Carbs - Is this Possible?
your body needs carbs to function. You can drastically reduce the amount of carbs you intake though and you definitely can avoid all white and/or processed carbs.
Some ideas: Quinoa Barley Beans Lentils Wild Rice - which is not actually rice but a mix of grains. I make Black Wild Rice with almonds, ginger & scallions and it's really good. Sweet Potatoes (eat 1/4 of a large one) Vegetables Fruits - chose ones with lower sugar contents ---apples, pears, berries. Stay away from dried fruits and melons.
Hope that helps.
