No Infertility coverage?
If you don't have coverage for fertility treatments, do you also have to pay out of pocket for all the initial testing? I went to the RE last month and had all my testing done, was diagnosed with unexplained second infertility. RE says we will start on an Clomid/IUI cycle whenever we are ready and tells me that it looks like my insurance won't be paying. We have to pay for the IUI out of pocket which I can understand but I thought that initial testing would be covered. Is this the norm?

Re: No Infertility coverage?
You should call your insurance co. Some will pay for diagnosis. It seems odd that there wouldn't be some coverage.

This. My old insurance covered NO infertility testing. I had Aetna. We were complete newbies to this whole thing. So when my gyn said she'd take some bloodwork and run some tests, I didn't think twice.
So, I get a bill a month late for $2,000. I was fuming. Ultimately after fighting with the lab, insurance, and doctor, I had to pay it.
I hate insurance!!!!!!!!!!

Ugh, my bill is around $2000 as well. DH has been arguing with the insurance company. We are going to talk to our advocate next, though we are probably going to wind up paying for it. I had never heard of the testing not being covered, so I didn't even think twice
Thanks for your responses ladies.

Re: No Infertility coverage?
I did not have infertility coverage either, but my insurance payed the initial visit and all the testing. It also covered the Lupron. I think it depends on your insurance and also your doctor staff and how they assisted you. I remember for my initial testing, the billing staff at my RE told me that most likely my intial testing would not be covered by my insurance since they have to code it under infertility. They could not put any other code. However, I was told to go to my GYN and have her order the same test under the GYN codes. I have a great relationship with the GYN and she had no problem doing such for me. They were the same test my RE ordered but the codes were different and my insurance totally covered it. You might want to check if that was the reason why the insurance didn't cover it. It could all have been on the codes used to bill them.
I hope everything works out for you

Re: No Infertility coverage?
call the company to understand the specifics. For example I don't have coverage for IVF however some of the dr visits are sonograms and consults which were covered I just had to pay for egg retrieval transfer etc....

Very interesting about the codes.... I wish I had known that before doing all the testing
We talked to the advocate and it looks like none of it is covered. I really hope we get pg on our own soon. These procedures can get really pricey!!
