No need for vision test for driver license renewals.

Albany, NY – New York is about to drop its requirement that motorists take an eye test when they renew their drivers licenses. Beginning Wednesday, the state Department of Motor Vehicles will let customers “self-certify” that they meet the vision requirements to drive, Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala said in a prepared statement.

People getting licenses for the first time still will have to take a vision test and commercial drivers license holders still will have to undergo medical and vision exams every other year, officials said.

That's actually a bit disturbing.....I kinda wanna know for sure that ALL licensed drivers can SEE......most people drive terribly as it is Chat Icon

...throwing poor vision into the mix is not such a hot idea.....

Not only do I think vision needs to be re-tested, but I think that once a person reaches a certain age there should be a requirement (or we can call it a refresher Chat Icon ) course and/or test to certify that the person is able bodied to drive .....Sadly, reflex and response times change as we age Chat Icon

I am NOT telling my DH this. His birthday is Thursday and he has to go renew his license. . .I am not going to tell him to wait until Wednesday to go -- I really was looking forward to him getting his eyes tested. . . he has not been to ANY doctor in over ten years so this is the only way I could have gotten him to get his eyes checked!

That's a pretty bad idea. The older you get, the more tests you should need to renew your license! Chat Icon

That's crazy. I have to say, though - the test was a joke (I just did it on Monday). They have a decent sized vision chart & all I had to do was read the top line. I think I still could have passed it with my glasses from 5 years ago. They should be making it a little tougher, not easier...

I actually think they should give a more robust vision test rather than drop it altogether..

The test is a joke, I agree. I have failed the test in MD, you have to look in a machine. When I saw the NY test was just an eye chart I just laughed.

I dont like it at all. The older you get the worse your vision gets. A lot of people do not have coverage for eye exams so the only time they get to do them is at Motor Vehicle.

I also think that when people hit a certain
age they should have to take the road test again. There are so many older people that should not be driving that still are.

I agree. But I think at the renewal for everyone, they should be taking another test. There are plenty of younger adults who can't drive either and should be retested.

Does this mean we don't have to go to DMV to renew it ever?

Self-certify? LOL What a joke

Next thing you know, all you'll need to do to get a driver's license is fill out an application and send in a check. Why bother with any of the details like ID checks or testing if a person can even drive? Chat Icon

Re: No need for vision test for driver license renewals.

Wonder how many people will have to die in car accidents because someone didn't get a vision test when they renewed their license, before they change it back?

Unreal.

Penny wise, pound foolish!

What they are saving now is going to be nothing compared to a massive lawsuit that a victim's family brings because a driver couldn't see!

They said they did it "To make the process easier to renew your license online or by mail."

Self certify..."yep I can see?"

I mean REALLY?????????????? This just shows NY doesn't give a ish about the safety of their drivers...which is ridiculous since we pay an arm and a leg to drive here.

Re: No need for vision test for driver license renewals.

I JUST did this THIS week. I went to DMV to take the eye test. I was actually going to post a ? about how I did NOT know this was a new requirement. Now they are getting rid of it? I was actually sort of comforted by it, as much as I was peeved I had to go.

ITA. I certainly don't want to be on the road with all the people that should have their licenses taken away because they can't see!

My grandmother is partially BLIND and has been driving for years Chat Icon she finally decided a few months ago that she won't be driving anymore The older generation can sometimes be extremely stubborn because they don't want to be a burden on people. Not good.

I agree with Neener. Everyone should have to retake the written & road test every 10 years. There are so many new laws that people don't observe plus I think a lot of people could use a healthy reminder of the rules of the road.
