No power - any way to prevent pipes from freezing?
LIPA has "no estimate" on when power will be restored to my area. We don't have a generator, we were in the process of getting estimates for one to be hooked right into our natural gas line.
Anyhow, it's getting pretty cold in our house and we're getting a little concerned about the pipes freezing and bursting. Anything we can do to try to prevent/slow that? Someone DH works with suggested running the water a little in each tap, but it would be cold water, will that help?
TIA for any suggestions.

running a little water *should* work. it's more that the moving water has a harder time freezing, even if it's cold. but, i think it needs to be colder than it is forecasted to be in order to pipes to freeze

Pipes don't really freeze until its like 20 or below. I think you will be fine. Let the water trickle at night if you are concerned.

Temps would have to go below 32 and stay that way for a few days for pipes to freeze. No worries and stay warm

Thanks, that makes me feel better. We have too much time on our hands and are starting to over think everything.

It's not freezing yet. You shouldn't have a problem.

To prevent pipes from freezing you can turn off your water and drain the pipes- There should be a release valve on your pipes. This is unnecessary unless it is going to be below 32 F.

Just to ease your mind. We have power but we are not running ANY heat at this point. So our house is pretty much in the same boat as yours heat wise right now
Our pipes are fine.
It would have to be below 32 degrees in your house for some time before the pipes would freeze. If this was January or February, I'd worry, Not yet.
