Not at all. We do it! The baby is crawling around where people walk!

Re: No shoes in the house rule
nope - we ask that no one enter our playroom (living room) with shoes on and we've never had even a sideways glance!

Re: No shoes in the house rule
Well I will do whatever you say when I come over
But I will say we have one friend who has this rule because they have a white shag carpet and I HATE going there.
I constantly have to make sure I have "proper" socks and feel weird if Im wearing a dress or something (its a coworker and we have gone there after work a lot).
In the summer it is weird too because I feel weird walking around in bare feet and my feet get cold. LOL.
ETS... they dont have kids.
And of course if it's rainy and muddy or something outside I always take my shoes off at people's houses.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
we don't wear shoes in our house but I hate asking ppl to take their shoes off. Once we move into a new place, we will be much more strict about no shoes

Re: No shoes in the house rule
We have a no shoes in the house rule.
I didn't realize how gross it was until I had kids that basically you were tracking all the dirt, and gum, grossness and dog poop inside with your shoes, and especially with a crawling baby.
Most people see our shoes in the front parlor and automatically ask if they should take their shoes off or just take their shoes off.
Rarely do I even have to mention it.
The only time the rule does not apply is if I am having a house party and there will be a lot of people over.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
Not at all. I do it at my house.
When you walk in you pretty much walk into our den where we always hang out all the time and Mason crawls all over the floor. I like to keep a clean floor.
Now, when I lived in my apartment I didn't b/c by the time you go through the lobby, in the elevator, etc it pretty much got clean off (and I didn't have a kid then)
Not sure about our new house we're moving into. It's a big fowyer and a lot of hardwood floors. Then again I may b/c I'm an anal neat freak
BTW... when we were looking at houses it was very common to see a note when we walked in about taking our shoes off and they also supplied booties. I loved it! Maybe you should supply booties when pple come over

This is us.
We take our shoes off in the house and taught our DD to as well.
However, I don't ever ask anyone else to. I just feel weird. I know when I go to someone else's house (before kids), unless I was prepared (socks at least?), I always felt so funny.
I do look stare intently at feet when people over and they don't take their shoes off on my carpet. The wood floors I am less bothered by.

We have no shoes in the house...but I never ask any guests to take them off....if they see me w/them off, I hope they get the idea, but otherwise I don't care that much. DH needs to be reminded of this rule though all the time

I say Yes, sorry
I'd never visit someone who had this rule.

Not at all!
I grew up this way, you always took your shoes off when you came home. I don't think I have ever had to ask someone to take his/her shoes off, I think people just naturally do it.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
We talke out shoes off in the house and generally people do the same. I have two kids who are laying all over the floors, and one who's hands are in her mouth every second, so I appreciate when people do it.
I walk everywhere in the city - subways, trains - why do I want that tracked all over trhe house?
I do think some people get a little bent out of shape by it. Never ever bothers me when someone asks me to do it.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
If someone that has never been here before is going to come over, DH or I let them know that there are no shoes in the house. They can decide if they still want to come by or not. But everyone understands & has no problem taking them off.
If the cable guy or any other worker comes by, I'll just lay a drop cloth for them to walk on.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
Doesn't bother me if I went to someones house. We don't bother at ours. If you take your shoes off at our house DS is likely to steal and eat them. It's less germy to keep them on where we live.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
This debate pops up every once in a while.
I find it annoying, but if you ask me to do it, I will remove my shoes - it's tough being the perfect houseguest sometimes.
I realize people do it and there have been times in my own house where I have thought it would be a good idea, but I would never ask other people to do that. I think it makes too many people uncomfortable and I hate going into someone else's bathroom, especially at a party, without my shoes on.

Re: No shoes in the house rule
I think too it's a comfort level with the person.
EX: I would feel totally fine about not wearing shoes at your house, but with my coworker, it's a guy and we are strictly work friends that hang out sometimes, so it makes me feel weird. Dh and I actually remind each other to "wear good socks" when we go there hahahahaha.
I also think MOST people have common sense and if they just walked through snow, dirt or mud they will immediately take their shoes off without you even asking.
I also dont have carpet in my house...so I just keep a swifter wet jet around and clean quick after people people if there is any kind of dirt left behind.

Same here. As much as I hate it, I let them do it b/c I figure cutting back as much as we do by US not wearing shoes is better than nothing.

We don't wear shoes but I don't ask guests to take theirs off. I guess deep down I hope they will but I don't feel right asking them. I have a crawler but we do it to keep clean too

Re: No shoes in the house rule
I agree that I will do whatever the host wants but, I always feel like, "if you don't want people to walk on your carpet because it's white.. then don't get a white carpet". KWIM. I have almost white carpets and they need to be cleaned frequently. It came with the house and when I get new ones.. they won't be white. But, I just kind of accept that it needs to be cleaned a lot.
