I would never ask guests to remove their shoes regardless but maybe that's just me.

And who's to say that they feet will be any less clean! lol

I say yes and no. I used to ask people to take their shoes off, but now I realise how much I HATE being asked to take my shoes off at someone elses house. I had to do it this weekend and it was horrible, my feet were freezing, my socks got wet in their kitchen.

In our old place we used to have rugs and we always had our guests take their shoes off. In our new place we have tile floors and have never said anything but DH & I have decided that from now on anyone who comes has to take their shoes off for the same reason. DS picks up everything and puts it in his mouth.

I find it rude. I understand why you may want to do it, but I feel it makes guests uncomfortable.

I don't. I think it makes guests uncomfortable, but I totally understand where you're coming from.

Re: Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes when coming in my house ????

We ask people to remove there shoes and always have. (Before DD)

One time when we lived in an apartment my DH made the landlord take off his shoes!!! Chat Icon

I do find it uncomfortable sometimes to ask people and I'm not as ridged as DH. I'll let it slide (I'll never ask his mom to take off her shoes she'd probably refuse anyway Chat Icon )

That said, I now remove my shoes in peoples homes.

I've also thought about having a basket of slippers for guests to use.

I guess we are the minority. I am used to taking my shoes off since I had always done that in my parents house and my mom had people take their shoes off so I just did the same thing.

ITA. Not that it is rude but that it makes guests feel uncomfortable. I know it makes me feel this way. I would never do it.

ditto.

we were recently at a someone's house and they wanted everyone to take their shoes off Chat Icon well one guy refused (it was all in good fun, it's his "running joke" that he's NOT to be made to take his shoes off. he's highly offended and will not. period.)

theyre close friends so noone was offended.

and usually the "must take shoes off" people dont take their own shoes off at the homes of others, I find. Chat Icon Chat Icon

so, my opinion, it irks me when people ask that.
clean your floors when your guests leave. Chat Icon

This is a regional thing because where I come from (MI), everyone removes their shoes when entering someone's home. I've seen soo many heated debates about this on another board and it gets ugly. I really don't understand why anyone would have a problem removing their shoes in someone's home but I digress Chat Icon

Re: Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes when coming in my house ????

We don't wear shoes in our house either. If guests come over I do not ask them to remove their shoes, however, our den (completely separate room, no open floorplan) is the playroom and it has wall to wall carpeting (the only room of the house that does). DC's spend most of their day in there, roll all over the floor and put everything in their mouths.

If guests wish to enter the playroom they must remove their shoes. If they feel uncomfortable then they do not have to go in the playroom.

BTW: The world's majority remove their shoes when entering another person's home. It's been a cultural norm for centuries. American and "the West" are actually in the minority when we keep our shoes on.

I wish I could ask them this too but DD doesn't even crawl yet-I'm just anal about these things! DH and I do and sometimes people do because they see a tray of shoes at our back door but I don't ask them.

I don't think it's rude - I definitely see where you're coming from - and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable if asked.

I tend to follow the host...if shoes are off, I'll remove mine and if shoes are on, I'll keep them on.

I find that if you leave the mat where your shoes are then people get the hint.
I would never ask them to actually do it.

I always take my shoes off but someone's smelly nasty feet may be worse!

Re: Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes when coming in my house ????

Shoes come off in my house.... And people are good - I've never had to ask. They see the shoes that we have taken off by the front door, and see us either walking around barefoot or with sockies on, and follow suit.

I have never thought otherwise simply because I've always had to do this in my aunt's houses or in my parents own house....

Oh well, guess I'm rude then. I can live...

Re: Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes when coming in my house ????

That's a pet peeve of mine....I think it's rude. I don't know why but it irks the hell out of me, especially in the summer. The only room that I prefer people not wear shoes is the boys room. When we have people over they don't usually go upstairs so that's not an issue.
