No to Injectables...yes to IVF!

So I met w/ Dr. Stelling today for the CD3 stuff and we discussed the next step. He wanted us to do another round of IUI w/ Clomid- he doesn't like injectables because of not having control of how many follicles it produces. I didn't want to do a repeat of the last 2 cycles and was willing to do IUI if we changed it up a bit- from the comments on this forum it seemed that a lot of girls had success w/ the injectables. Then we looked at my insurance which covers 3 IVF cycles a year. We decided to try 1 IVF cycle now before this year is up so we will have 3 more if needed next year. So here we are! I start birth control tonight. I am scared/ nervous/ excited. Any advice you ladies can give me, I would greatly appreciate it! I was not expecting to do IVF right away but looks like implantation will be first week of December.

Oh, and I'm going for a saline sonogram next Monday- any info on this? I figured since I did 2 IUIs, it can't be much different.

2 iui only clomid never a injectable I would not go to IVF.

What is your dx?

He can control clomid,how?

I would try injectables bc u could always cancel cycle if you overstimmed

Re: No to Injectables...yes to IVF!

My story is similar to yours. We did 2 rounds of Clomid and 2 rounds of Letrazole but I never responded at all! Not one follicle no matter how high the dosage was. I then moved on to injectables but produced way too many follicles for an IUI. We then moved on the IVF.

I was so nervous about doing IVF but it really wasn't as bad as I had imagined. The injections aren't bad at all, once you do it a few times you won't even think twice about it.

I ended up having 27 mature follicles at retrieval, 22 fertilized. We transferred 2 and they both took! I ended up losing my twins due to other issues I had, but that's a whole other story!

My only advice is to try to stay calm and not stress too much. It's easier said then done, I know, but I do feel that being as relaxed as possible is very important.

Wishing you lots of luck!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know you already decided on IVF but that sounds like a huge jump to me. Stimming on injectables is a lot more controlled than taking Clomid. You can adjust the dosing on injectables.

I'm sorry, but to me, your RE sounds money hungry. IVF is a big deal.

That being said, since you've already made the decision, I hope this is it for you! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I also never did an injectibles IUI cycle. Went from medicated cycles, to medicated 3 IUI's and then straight to IVF.
I am glad I did because this way after going thru all the injection which for me was the worst and kinda traumatic (and I have a very high threshold for pain usually) I then had fertilized eggs to freeze.
If ur ins covers that many IVFs (as a sidenote - WOW! ur ins is amazing) IMO ur making the right decision.

in terms of IVF: u get monitored from day 2 of ur period, the Dr office calls u after each monitoring telling u how much and what medication to inject and take. once ur follies mature enough they will tell u to take a trigger shot as well as u and ur DH go on antibiotics to eliminate a chance of infection.
on the day of retrieval ur DH gives sperm and u get put under to take the eggs out. they tell u immediately how many total were retrieved.
they call u the next day to tell u how many were fertilized and tell u the day of transfer which can be 3-5 days post retrieval.
then beta on what shld be ur day 1 of next period.

Good luck!!!! Chat Icon

RSNY pushed me to do IVF right after three cycles of IUI with just clomid as well. They suggested to skip injectable as well. IVF was also unsuccessful. Good luck!

I did the lowest dose of Clomid (50mg) and had 2 mature follies the 1st IUI and 3 mature follies the 2nd time. Dr. Stelling said that with the injectables his worry is about multiple births and the risks to you as well as the child when having that happen. I would have done another IUI (but w/o Clomid) but wanted to take advantage of the IVFs with my insurance. Instead of 3 paid cycles, I'll have 4 since this one is considered to be in a different year. That is the main reason we skipped straight to IVF instead of doing the IUI w/ different meds.

Thanks everyone for your input!! It is so helpful!! I had no idea my insurance was that good but am so thankful now hearing it from you all. I work for the county and fingers are crossed they don't change insurance/ don't make us pay for it! It is one thing to keep my mind at peace.

Did any of you go for the IVF orientation/ how to inject class and was it helpful? My work schedule doesn't really allow for me to go but if it is needed, I will definitely work it out.

I found the injection class helpful but a lot of girls just watched youtube videos online and it worked out fine for them. It's very overwhelming looking at all the meds at once so for me, I found it easier to separate daily meds into separate zip locks. I have my 2 viles of Menopur, syringe, smaller needle, alcohol swabs and gauze in each one. It simplified it for us.

I have Empire BCBS but the Suffolk County Municipal Health Employee plan. I really didn't realize that some insurances don't cover IVF or even steps before that. It's crazy when there are so many people who need these services.
