Noggin/Nick Jr's handling of Black History Month
Does anyone else find it incredibly bizarre? They can't find any other figures in Black history to honor other than the inventors of the Super Soaker and potato chips? Maybe there are others that I haven't seen, but what about Rosa Parks? Dr. King? Harriet Tubman? Just to name a few?

I think they try to keep it super simple for the little kiddies.

I agree....what little kid is going to know about Rosa Parks....kids can identify with the super soaker and potato chips. They will have plenty of time to learn about others throughout their education.

I think the ages of the kids who watch NICK jr wouldnt understand Rosa Parks and the other civil rights activists. They're probably just trying to make it easy and fun.

Re: Noggin/Nick Jr's handling of Black History Month
I think they're going to stay away from Rosa Parks and anybody whose story is related to slavery or segregation, because those are topics that would be tough to talk about with such little kids who watch. Better to stick with inventors.

Re: Noggin/Nick Jr's handling of Black History Month
I've been home the last few days and I was actually happy to see that they didn't just focus on 2 or 3 influential African Americans! Granted you can't compare the impact of MLK to the person who invented the potato chip, however, it's good for little kids to see and hear about a lot of different individuals, imo. And I think they stayed away from MLK because they talked about him last month for his birthday. Also, I remember seeing something about Rosa Parks on Nick Jr, but I think it was last year?

Having worked for Viacom and knowing their diversity initiatives I would go so far to guess that the general feeling is that the very important figures mentioned in the first post are well known. They are probably trying to highlight additional great contributions by African Americans. For a child some of these things we may find minimal are in fact huge and at their level of understanding.
And I love that they highlight the first African American female brain surgeon for so many reasons.

OK, I definitely get that. ANd I didn't see the other ones mentioned, only the potato chip and super soaker guys. My initial response was like, "Of ALL the black people who ever did great things, THESE are the people they are highlighting?" I was initially confused, but it makes more sense now.
