Oscar-winning actor says ‘black history is American history’
Morgan Freeman says in an interview with “60 Minutes” that there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."
"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."
The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.
"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.
Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."

I can't help but think that if a whilte person made these comments, they would be considered racist...but GOOD for Morgan Freeman!

Just wait - he will be too. Not sure if anyone remembers, but Bill Cosby has made similar comments and incurred the wrath of many for doing so.

very good point...
but the sad reality of it is, there will also be racist people. there is really nothing you can do about it.
alot of factors need to go into fixing racism
from education, to parenting... etc..
blacks and whites will always see the world differently, and its really sad that people suffer because they are caught in the middle of it.

Just wait - he will be too. Not sure if anyone remembers, but Bill Cosby has made similar comments and incurred the wrath of many for doing so.
I tend to agree with Mr. Freeman.
I was pretty young and could be wrong but didnt bill cosby say racist things about white people.

very good point...

alot of factors need to go into fixing racism
from education, to parenting... etc..
blacks and whites will always see the world differently, and its really sad that people suffer because they are caught in the middle of it.
It's true... but I don't think a "month" does it. It is something that should be worked on every day, all year round. Same thing with women's month.

i loved that part too (and also agree with you initial comment about if it had been a white person that said it).
Its the same with anything- take drama, for instance (since there's been alot, lately ). people make comments back and forth, and that's that. people arent going to agree on everything, so be it. BUT the part that makes it BAD is when everyone starts pointing out 'who causes drama, who started it, blah blah blah". People get more carried away with the debate over drama/racism, than the ACTUAL topic at hand... and essentially, the baby just gets tossed out with the bathwater.
There's NO:
white history month
Men's history month
Straight people parade
etc....
We get mad that EVERYONE is not considered "equal", Yet, we are the ones that draw these lines, and make these divisions within our society. You can't be Equal AND special at the same time. you have to choose one.

I remember that- he made a lot of comments about how some blacks parented their kids. Some people thought he was out of line. Personally, I agreed with him- I have seen many of his gripes reflected in the schools I've worked in.

I agree too...Keep bringing up the "differences: and there will ALWAYS be differences.
I hate hate hate when people have to feel the need to shove their relgion/race/nationality etc down their OWN throats to be proud of it.
Why cant we all be human and celebrate what we share versus what makes us different?

i agree with him.
i have alwasy said that why should we have a black history month and yet no white history month????
im not a racist.
i also think its silly to haev things like a gay pride parade, when there are no straight pride parades.
it just doesnt make sense to me.
i feel like if everyone wants to be equal, we shouldnt have these events that segragade us.

Thank you! I've often said something very similar when discussing this topic with friends and family. I agree with you, and Morgan Freeman, and Bill Cosby 100%.

I don't necessarily disagree, but how do you feel about things like the St. Patrick's day parade, Columbus Day parade, etc?
I do think people should be equal, but I think it is OK to be proud of your culture and celebrate it on occasion.

I agree- I don't see anything wrong with parades- we have plenty parades that celebrate America... why shouldn't other countries have their parades. Parades are a 1 day event to celebrate your culture.
But a "month", what does that do? We should be learning and aware of Black History all year round, not just in February.

I absolutely love Morgan Freeman he's one of my favoite actors. I really don't see the big deal with what he said and I can see his point. I still  him.

You are correct he bought the rights to the little rascals because he said ( WHITE0 people were exploiting Buckwheat .
