Non pacifier users
How did your DC soothe themselves? My DD is addicted to her pacifier and always took any one that I gave her. I tried soooooo many different ones with DS and he barely takes them, if anything he takes the soothie now and then but hardly ever. Bedtime is a lot of walking around. He sucks his fist a lot - is that how a thumb sucker starts off? I wish he would take a paci for me!
Also if they didn't use one and woke up during the middle of the night, how did they put themselves back to sleep? He sleeps through right now but I'm guessing eventually he'll wake up from teething, etc. and then what?

Re: Non pacifier users
DD never took to one...I tried, but she wanted nothing to do with it.
I really didn't mind...just one less habit to have to break. She never sucked on her thumb either.
The only time she woke during the night was to be fed and since I was EBF, that kind of did the soothing trick.
Other than that...she would just soothe herself.

Re: Non pacifier users
Christopher takes a pacifier, but honestly, his blanket soothed him and still soothes him better than anything else. He likes to cuddle it

DS hated it. He rubs the tag of his blanket between his fingers to soothe himself

Re: Non pacifier users
DD never took a pacifier...but at 7 months, I gave her a hand-knit blanket to sleep with. She sucks on the ends of the blanket Usually, it falls out of her mouth while she is sleeping and she doesn't wake up looking for it.
We have called her Linus, because she loves her blanket

Re: Non pacifier users
Kristina didn't want it til about a month ago at 6 months of age.... I'm kind of happy that she did, b/c her hand was starting to go into her mouth a LOT with the teething, and I didn't want to go down that road again.... My sister sucked her thumb til she was 14 I think.
We will be donating her binkies to the binky fairy when the time comes.... Right now I don't mind giving them to her b/c I think that they are helping her get through the teething.

Re: Non pacifier users
Thanks! It will be nice to not have to go in 7,000 times a night to give him a nuk like I did with DD, but I'm just worried for when he gets upset what will calm/soothe him. I know my DD immediately asks for her nukie and blankie when she's upset. She's going to need detox for both when the time comes to get rid of them!

Re: Non pacifier users
DD never took to a pacifier - she would spit it out 2 seconds after giving it to her.
The only thing that soothes her is Mommy or Daddy. Could be holding her or just rubbing her back until she goes back to sleep. But it usually doesn't take very long unless she's really sick or teething really bad.

Re: Non pacifier users
I had a finger sucker(middle and ring together) and now I have a thumb sucker. It did start as sucking on the fist for about 12 weeks. The day DD#2 found her thumb was the day she started sleeping through the night 8pm until 7:30am.

Re: Non pacifier users
My kids didn't take to the pacifier, Julia would suck on her bottom lip (not sure how she does it) but she would do that everytime she got tired. Todd Jr does the same thing, or he will suck on his thumb.

Re: Non pacifier users
Ryan is EBF. Rarely he will take a paci but I prefer him not to.
He will suck on his hands.
And when he wakes up in the middle of the night it's usually to eat. So he nurses himself back to sleep.

Re: Non pacifier users
I tried with both but neither wanted them.
DD is a thumb sucker. Her front teeth are a little bucked from it.
DS didn't really need anything. He will now sometimes stick his thumb in his mouth when he sees DD doing it, but he thinks it's a game b/c he laughs when he does it.

That is so cute! I'm still waiting for DS to open his fist...maybe then he'll realize what a fabulous head of hair he has.

same here.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I never run into the room at the first sound of a cry/whine. Once DD and DS started sleeping through the night I would wait 3 minutes, if she/he didn't stop whining/crying or started to cry hard I would go in and feed. But it is rare that either of them ever cries/whines more than 3 minutes. They just falls back to sleep.
Once DD was older I started waiting 5 minutes and never had to go in (unless she was sick.)
3 or 5 minutes seems like FOREVER in the middle of the night, but it's really not. I just watched the clock and it worked for me.
Good luck

Re: Non pacifier users
DS doesn't like pacifiers at all. He soothes himself to sleep by shaking his head left and right for a few minutes. I find it a little odd. I tried it myself when I was tired and it gave me a headache
Either that, or he likes to chew on his burp cloth.

Same for us, word for word. She was a colic baby, and we TRIED to get her to take a pacifier, thinking that would help her soothe...she wouldn't even take it.

Re: Non pacifier users
Tyler doesn't really like the pacifier...he used it briefly while teething, and that was it...however, he is addicted to his "MR BEAR", a stuffed panda bear that he CANNOT fall asleep without. We are in deep trouble since I cannot find a duplicate of Mr Bear ANYWHERE!!
