Non-stop whining at 13 mos old - please help me b/c I can't take this anymore!
For the past three days this has been my life. Constant whining all day. When he wanted something DS used to point at what he wanted and say "this" or "that" or look at me and say "mama" and then point - yes, there was whining but only when he didn't get what he wanted or when he was tired or cranky. Now it is non-stop whining and screaming - when he wants something he points and whines, whines whines - if I don't give in - then comes the high pitched shriek repeatedly while pointing. If I put him in his pack and play or high chair and leave the room - high pitched shreiking until i come backk. When he plays if he gets frustrated - no more babbling - its all whining all day.
Is he getting sick? Is it teething? Or is this a phase? Did I do something to encourage this behavior and if so, how can i stop it or at least curtail it? I try not to respond but then he just whines louder and louder and shrieks and my nerves just can't take it - this is one thing that has always gotten to me - the whining is like nails on the chalkboard for me
Any advice would be greatly appreciated b/c I am at my wits end and snapping at everyone and when DH gets home I am a nasty mess

I've gone through this on and off with Maddie. I think it's a combination of a few things - teething, frustration b/c of lack of ability to communicate, etc.
It does get better, but they go through phases. Right now DD (15 months) is in a good stage, but it changes daily lately.

Generally speaking DS is pretty good and doesnt do a ton of whining...but he does have his moments. My girls were big time whiners as were DHs girls. At first we thought it was just a boy thing. Boy=less whining. Then we realized that we are both a lot more consistant with DS then we were with the girls. We dont EVER give in to his whining.
He whines b/c he wants the remote..we put it away where he cant get it and ignore him.
He wants to go in a room where he isnt allowed alone. We remove him from the room. Put him down and walk away and ignore him until he stops whining.
Etc.....
For the most part it appears to be working.
But then again maybe it's not and its just his temperment...but it's worth a shot.

We're going thru it a little bit (13 mos next week). Whining when I leave the room or when he doesn't get what he wants. Its mainly when I'm not paying full attention to him, like cooking dinner, he is very needy lately. I think its just a phase. Most importantly just stay consistent w/the things he can't have or play with. With us its the remote...he'll walk over to them as fast as he could and I beat him to it and take them away...OH the whining!! Lately hes gotten a little more accepting of not being able to play w/them, b/c I've been consistent.
If I'm cooking dinner and I need 5 whole minutes to fry something or whatever, I let him whine. It is impossible to carry him around or play EVERY second of the day when there are other things that absolutely NEED to get done. Its annoying but whining isn't going to hurt them either.
