If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

Do you think they really wouldn't like it? Or is it something that once they had it would like it? Would you even consider getting it for them if they said that?

I'm confused as well. My brothers GF loves to read. I mean LOVES but, when I mention to her the electronc readers she says she would never use them and has no desire to buy one. I've always wondered if she was just saying that bc she doesnt want me to get her one. I would love to buy her one but, I feel that I would be disrespecting her if I bought it.

I love holding my books, turning the pages, underlining, highlighting, dog-earing - I love book covers.

The experience of reading would be so different; it would feel so foreign. I get the convenience of a nook but I truly never want one. Call me crazy, old fashioned -- but I never want to be without book shelves.

It depends on the person. But if they outright said they would never want it, I wouldn't take the chance of getting it for them "just in case."

We had to convince my MIL that she would like the Kindle once she had it. The idea grew on her, and she bought it with the idea in mind that she would return it if she didn't like it.

She had it one day and couldn't stop raving over how much she liked it.

I'm on the fence about it. I love books but don't think I'd want a nook/kindle because I love to pass on a good book. I'm not sure how that would work with one.

On the other hand, everyone I know that has one loves them.

Can you get one with a gift receipt in case they want to return?

I was on the fence for a long time about it. I thought I'd miss the feel and experience of paper books. I probably would have returned it if someone else got it for me before I'd totally decided myself.

I still read a lot of paper books too, I'd say about half my stuff is on the Nook and half in traditional books right now. That's mainly because I'm in the midst of a few older series and I can't find a lot of them in e-libraries so I've been borrowing them in regular book form. All the new stuff I've been reading on the Nook.

Barb - being able to lend books only once (and in some cases not at all - it depends on the author & publisher) is a drawback for me. I keep hoping that will change. The Kindle is supposed to be getting the LendMe technology soon, but as far as I've heard they still won't support library lending.

I have told my brother numerous times that I don't want one despite how much I love to read. I have three bookcases filled with books that I am constantly adding to. I love spending hours at Barnes and Noble. I know he wants to get me one but I have less than zero interest in it and would return it if I got it.

So my answer to you is: Don't get it if the person says they don't want it.

Same here. My mother, OTOH, who isn't very technologically savvy, LOVES her Kindle. Chat Icon

Also, I would never consider getting a gift for someone if they specifically said "I never want that." I think it's a tad presumptuous and says, "I know what you like better than you do." (I KNOW that's not your intention, but that may be how it comes off.)

exactly
it's not just reading words..its the experience of what you're holding, turning the pages etc
staring at yet another screen would take that away and i'm not ready to do that just yet

eta: so if someone says they really don't think they want one.. be prepared for the same reaction when you give it to them

This is exactly the way I feel. I loooooooove my books. And when I have nothing new to read, I love standing in front of my bookshelf deciding which book I'm going to read for the thousandth time.

I used to feel the same way but now I desperately want a Nook.

I thought I'd miss the feel and smell of a book but really I just like the feel and smell of an old book. A new one from BN or some other bookstore - I mean it's just printed pages. I give no sentimental value towards the printing presses anymore.

If someone specifically said they didn't want one - I wouldn't buy them one.

ETA: It also depends on how close I am to that person - my best friend? Or DH? I'd buy it for them and say "just try it, please? I'll return it if you don't like it." Chat Icon

I love books and love to read. I have no interest in a nook or a Kindle.

I look at a computer screen most of the day, I don't want to read for pleasure that way.

Also, I am comfortable with most technology, but don't want to be bothered downloading books, I can barely keep up with uploading photos from my camera. I am rarely on the computer at home.

I love books.

Would never want the Nook or Kindle. Ever. If I got it, I'd return it.

There's just something about picking up MY treasured copy of a book, worn out with dog ears and notes in the margin. A Nook or Kindle will never replace that for me, and I don't want the convenience of one either.

You can write and highlight on the Kindle and as far as looking at a 'screen" it does really look like a regular page of a book...not that bright computer monitor screen glare.

But no, if someone specifically said they didnt want something, I wouldnt.

I love reading, I love books and I LOVE my kindle more than anything. Its the best gift I've ever gotten.

The people who say they prefer a book to an e reader are like the people who like carrying a CD instead of an ipod. It makes no sense. Just my 2 pennies!

Re: If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

If I traveled a lot, I could see the convenience of the nook or kindle.

I love to hold a book, cuddle up with it in big comfy couch, flag pages of importance. And I simply love book stores.

I really don't know how much I'd like a nook without having ever seen/used one.

Can you borrow (download) books from the library and put them on your nook or kindle?

Re: If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

My father in law wasn't really interested in them, but he loves gadgets, and he bought a GPS just because it was on sale in Costco, and he had said he didn't see the point of those either.

We bought him a nook because we didn't know what else to get him for his 65th birthday & now that he is retired, we figured he'd like a new toy.

We did get the gift reciept & wouldn't have been offended if he returned it, but he seemed excited & opened it right away.

I don't think for him, it will replace books entirely, but he liked that you can download from the library & he travels a lot, so he is excited to use it for that. He is a really fast reader & sometimes travels for 2-3 weeks at a time, so that is a lot of books to carry around.

ETA- For the record, my DH has a Sony e-reader & I have never used it, even thogh I read books almost every day. Chat Icon

I don't revere CDs as I do books. Two totally different experiences to me, listening to music and reading.

I love to read, love it, and really would not want one. I love book stores, and I like to lay in bed and fold up my book.

the girls in my book club were horrified when I told them I was getting a nook. One of the girls was given a Kindle and she hated it.

People who love *books* truly love the book itself... I love reading and don't care about the book experience so much, plus I would NEVER write in a book, dog ear, etc. That's probably why the nook works for me - I never have to worry about it getting messed up at all.

Exactly my feelings.

I have used a Kindle and it was interesting and there are some compelling reasons to use it - but I still don't want one.

As to the iPod/CD comparison... it is not at all the same thing. Listening to music is auditory. I can listen on a record, a cd, an iPod, a radio.. as long as the sound is coming out and is clear I am happy.

Reading is an EXPERIENCE to me - more than just words on a page. It's tactile and emotional and as much as I'd appreciate the thought if someone gave me a Kindle, I'd feel like they really didn't know me very well.

ETA: My vote is not to buy it for the person. You can witness to them all day long and tell them WHY it's better and more convenient... but to buy it for them is kind of attempting to force their conversion. Reminds me of the religious salespersons post!

Re: If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

It really depends!

A lot of people who don't have an ereader told me they loved holding books, turning pages.

Honestly, I made my own decision for a Nook. I thought about it and really researched it. Was it going to be a toy that I would stop using in 2months?

1/ I had no room to store books anymore and clutter is a huge issue. I am completely decluterirng my house.

2/ I don't have money to keep buying books, even paperback.

3/ The convenience to rent books for free from the library in my own home. No return. No late fees.

I don't miss books. The transition has been really much smoother than I ever thought. I love my nook. I do forget it's not a book. I go to bed and read and I love it. Just I would with a book.

But again, I think a lot of avid readers are not ready to give up books. Yet, I know most people who own a ereader love it.

It really allowed me to read again. I felt no guilt from cluttering my house and not spending more money on books. That had really stopped me for a long time from reading.

This is me! I have complete OCD with real books. They must remain "perfect". My books look like new even after I read them. The nook is perfect for me.
