North Bellmore board meeting last night

They announced a new position for our k-6 little district. Deputy Superintendent. So we now have a Superintendent, an Assistant Superintendent, an Assistant to the Superintendent and the new Deputy Superintendent.

Am I the only person who finds this outrageous?

When asked where the money came from to create this position that has never existed in our district before, the Board replied - oh, it's built into the current budget.

Really? Tell that to the teachers who purchased their own supplies last year.

It's amazing what goes on right under your nose as a tax payer.

Rant over.

Re: North Bellmore board meeting last night

4 Superintendents for K-6? How many students are there? I really think they need to start consolidating some Superintendent jobs with multiple districts. Keep the districts separate, and separate Principals, but above that level, start merging and saving money.

I think it's disgusting how they can just take away all that money from the kids... even if there *is* "extra" money in the budget.... do something that will directly benefit the kids.... new books, new playground, new computers, whatever.....

Re: North Bellmore board meeting last night

I just moved into North Bellmore and recently heard about the proposal for the grant/stipend. Was that discussed last night as well? 4 Superintendents is ridiculous! I guess that is why our taxes are going up by 4%. I know in the district where I work, we get a itemized budget. I'm sure it was on there in b/w the lines. It's so hard to play both sides, being that school taxes pay my salary, but paying taxes and increasing taxes sux!

That is absolutely rediculous.

ETA: Did they give a reason as to why these positions need to be created?

ITA!
I honestly can't believe that it hasn't been done already (or that the system has existed the way it has for all of these years).

No one is going to volunteer to give up their position, but it's stupid that admins/higher ups in ED can't put their brains together to realize that it's the smart decision.

Re: North Bellmore board meeting last night

I think that is the norm now and also find it is ridiculous. I live in merrick and my school taxes along are $9k+ to have all these "superintendants" who do the same damn thing making $150k. Chat Icon

It really is time for people to start fighting back and start asking questions but unfortunately most people dont!

YES! send this into Newsday.

They got the extra money from the budget, now they have to spend it. could you imagine if they had the money and didn't spend it? they could never ask for more.
It makes total sense to me.

STOP APPROVING THE SCHOOL BUDGET VOTES! MAKE THEM LAYOFF THESE USELESS POSITIONS!!

I dont mean to sound ignorant, but I always thought that if you vote down the school budget votes, that it was the teachers and students that suffered most from this (I assumed that the higher positions were basically locked in regardless, and the cuts would be made elsewhere?) But, i really don't know much about them at all.

When you vote for or against a school budget, does it usually list where the money will be allocated?

Re: North Bellmore board meeting last night

not approving the school budget will not be the answer b/c so many other things will be effected...not just the superintendents....if you feel there is a specific thing that needs to be addressed than that is what you should speak up about.........the whole school budget is not just about superintendents....many other things will suffer if the budget isn't passed and unfortunately, i am sure the super. jobs will not even be effected

You are right they will lay off teachers and eliminate programs not remove Administrative positions. It's very rare that they do that.

this kind of thinking only hurts the kids and the teachers. budget votes have nothing to do with this.

this isn't aimed directly at you, but i don't understand how people don't know this. it's a misperception that needs to be cleared up because if people really think voting no is going to lower taxes or get rid of positions, they are not truly informed about the process.

Trust me, that's not how it works. I'm in Wantagh and our school budget was voted down this year b/c last year a HUGE bond was approved by the community to improve all the sports facilities (a new small 3rd gymnasium in the hs, artificial turf football field, new press box, etc) and the annual interest payment on it is also huge. Community members (including people with kids in the schools and former school board members) were very upset that it was another double digit increase due to the interest payment and voted it down.

So what did the school board do? Filled an administration position and canceled all student sports teams and clubs from all schools. I drove by the school last week and saw that they are installing the new artificial turf field that as of right now won't be used. Chat Icon

The community has been fundraising to bring back clubs and sports, they need to raise $650,000 and as of yesterday have raised $521,497.

Well, I'm not going to touch the issue of voting on school budgets...Chat Icon

However, our budget did pass this year with a 4% increase. Ok. Fine. I'll pay it. But between this new unnecessary admin position and the proposed 39 million dollar bond they want to pass in October, something has to happen.

It's absurd. I can't wait to vote no in October. Chat Icon

Sorry, but i think this is the way it should be. when i was in clubs and programs in school, i had to raise money to help support me doing these extra curricular activities. I sold candy, knick knacks, popcorn etc.. I am not opposed to fund raising one bit.
If the districts are creating additional jobs to spend money, then it needs to be taken to a higher power. It's misappropriation of taxes. Senators, congressman need to know. newsday should be the start.

ETA- I agree with you... how do you spend money on a turf that you don't have clubs to play on? again, misappropriation of taxes and needs to be addressed by higher-ups.

You are joking, right? Some fundraising for club trips or whatever is one thing, this is entirely different IMO.

The school board insisted they NEEDED to raise a multi-million dollar bond to improve the sports facilities, it got passed. The next year, on top of the huge interest payment on said bond, they add a whole bunch of other administrative stuff into the budget, the community balks and says they need to curb spending, times are tough all around and people can't continue to afford double digit % tax increases, and the school board retaliates by taking away ALL sports and clubs, so that now the multi millions committed to this project is literally a waste of time. And said school board did not make one cost cutting measure to try to get the budget approved in the 2nd vote, nor did they make any after it failed, which has been well documented in Newsday, local papers and on local news broadcasts. Sorry, that's just disgusting behavior. I'd have been fired if I didn't listen to my boss and/or board of directors when I was told to reign in my budget.

Sorry, didn't see your ETA, I was so annoyed that you thought it was ok for them to screw the taxpayers that way. Chat Icon

Take care of the damage your schools are causing the community before you hire a bunch of un-needed positions.
