North Carolina school shooting... slight delay in school day...
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/butler-high-school-shooting_us_5bd72dece4b0d38b5886451d
A high school in Matthews, North Carolina, resumed classes on Monday just hours after one student shot and killed another on campus ? a disturbing indication of just how common gun violence has become in the United States.
Butler High School, roughly 12 miles southeast of Charlotte, went into lockdown around 7 a.m. Monday after a male student fired a gun at another male student during a disagreement in a crowded hallway, reported The Associated Press.
The victim was transported to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries, officials said. The suspect was taken into custody and questioned by police. Authorities have not released the names and ages of the students.
By 9:30 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced that the lockdown had been lifted. Parents were allowed to pick up their children, but for the remaining students, classes resumed as normal, the school district tweeted. ...
A school shooting in the hallways, where one student died, and it just delayed the school day a bit? Are we really that used to school shootings that it's become just an inconvenience?

They probably had to prepare for a state test.
I can't.

I can see leaving the school open-kids were already there, and they were no longer in danger--the ones that weren't picked up might not have any place else to go.
I do wonder if classes really went on "as normal." though. espcially classes that either of these students were in.

School shootings like this has been more common than we think. Not mass shootings but disagreements or kids bringing in their parents guns to school. This happened all the time in the 80' and 90's, hence why NYC schools have metal detectors.
I do think gun violence is out of control, so I am glad every thing is getting reported by the media now and awareness is being raised.
It's a crazy @ss world we live in. That poor kid and family.

The sad reality is that this is becoming the norm.

North Carolina school shooting... slight delay in school day...
As a former h.s. teacher, I totally understand this. I wouldn't expect classes to go quite "as normal" but to keep school open as a support to students. To send then home to most likely empty houses to be upset and alone probably isn't the best option. If they keep school open, they have access to guidance counselors or grief counselors and just have a place to be. They are teenagers, many would prefer to have regular classes than to have to figure out how to react on their own.

I am sure they talked about it and had counseling sessions all day. Also the option for parents to pick up their kids.

But Tracy O. Russ, the chief communications officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, told TIME that the decision to keep the school open was made to provide students with a safe place to stay until their families could come get them.
“Our goal was to ensure that students could remain on campus and safe until such time that transportation arrangements could be made by families,” Russ said in an email.

That makes total sense. However, the tweet that went out said that "classes will proceed on campus today..."
That makes it sound much different than staying safe until their parents could get them, or talk with counselors, etc.

I have a friend whose daughter goes to that school - they picked her up. She was very upset, scared and needed to be with her parents. But - I understand leaving it open for those whose parents may not have been able to get there right away

Meaning students will move from class to class as usual. They need to be accounted for and supervised. There are plenty of parents who are unable to or opt not to pick up their kids or kids who prefer to be there with their friends. I just take it as a cue that while they're there they will be with with usual classes, not just learning as usual. From what I've experienced, every teacher will handle the day in their own way whether it's having some normalcy or just a venting session or dialogue about whatever.

This.
I liken it to 9/11. I was a senior in college. My classes were not canceled. Every professor allowed us to come to class and just talk, if we wanted to. For children in high school, parents may not be immediately available to pick up their children.

Yes, I agree with this. There’s a lot of shootings in school where there is a specific target for a reason (I.e. not a “mass shooting” in the eyes of our media). There’s so many states too where carrying a gun is a normal thing. If you google school shootings, the map is scary. Way way way more prevalent to the nth degree than the big ones we know by heart. Scary state of affairs. And not to get too political but our current governing bodies will continue to turn their heads on the issue.
