North Shore Animal
Anyone adopt from NSAL? If you go and see a puppy you like do you get to take it home that day or is there a waiting period?

Re: North Shore Animal
I adopted from a satellite of NSAL, which was like one of their vans in a parking lot that had a pet supply store.
I took him home that day.
You give a donation usually.
They also will come to your house in a few weeks to double check on the animal.
Be careful though.. I know it's great and better than buying an animal from a pet shop, but I ended up with a puppy who was misplaced after Hurricane Katrina.
(my experience with my puppy did not end up well at all)
be sure to get the background of the animal & have them fully disclose it to you.
good luck!

Re: North Shore Animal
There's a waiting period and they basically do everything but a credit check. But like pp said if you go to one of the vans, I believe you take home the same day.

My dog Jake is from NSAL. We were able to take him home that day. They actually call references while you are there and they do come to your house and check on the animal. We had a great experience with them.

Re: North Shore Animal
We adopted our dog from there a few years ago. We were able to bring her home that same day. They did call our references while we were there and advised us that if they couldn't reach them or verify our info we wouldn't be able to take her that day.

Re: North Shore Animal
My parents were able to take their dog home that day. They did all the background, reference checks while they sat there. They did do a home check about a week or so later.

We have adopted 4 dogs from there over the years. You wait there about 2 hours while they call your references but you bring the dog home the same day. We have had great experiences with them. They do a home check after you adopt.

Re: North Shore Animal
we just got our puppy there a few months ago. You take him home that day if all checks out with your references. Its a 175 fee for puppies and a 75 spay/neuter fee that you get back once you get them fixed.
I would ask all kinds of questions about the health of the animals. My puppy has just about every puppy illness possible. He had kennel cough when we picked him....they almost all do and they gave us meds for him. He had to have another dose of the meds since it took 2x as long to go away than they said. He also had worms (which I know is common), giardia, and mites. The vets bills got to be quite a bit on top of all the normal vaccinations.
If I lived closer I would have taken him to them to treat but an hour drive was not feasible.
While none of the issues were major I just feel they need to take better care of the puppies they are giving out.

Re: North Shore Animal
Both times I adopted from NSAL (once a dog and once two kittens), we took the pets home the same day. The "waiting period" is 30 minutes or so while they check your references and paperwork.
I had good experiences both times. Both times, the animals had minor illnesses (one cat developed conjunctivitis and the puppy developed kennel cough) -- but both times, their vets treated them for free.
I would adopt from them again - staff was also very friendly.
Their adoption fees are on their site. They often have promotions where adoption fees are waived (as they were when we adopted our kittens) -- but we always donate at least the adoption fee when we get pets there.

We have adopted 3 dogs from there and got to take them home the same day after they verified our references. They also did a "home check", even while we still lived in Westchester
