Not meant to cause drama or to offend but RANT!

My dh was at home depot earlier.

As he was pulling out of the lot, he almost got hit by a muslim woman who was driving a huge SUV. Now the woman was wearing "traditional" clothing. Robe, head and face veil, everything was covered except for a little slit for her eyes. She said she didnt see him coming, and she admitted because she has LIMITED VISION due to the veil over her. So basically, she cant see side to side very well.

I know its a religion thing and freedom of religion and stuff BUT I think its VERY dangerous that she has such limited vision due to what she is wearing! What if a kid ran out, she wouldnt see him coming out of the side of her eye because of her veil????

I just think that they shouldnt be driving all covered up like that. Anyone else?

I have no problem with people maintaining their customs. But, if it can possibly injure someone you might want to modify it a little.

If you can drive an SUV, you can modify your veil to give you improved peripheral vision.

I would think...

Totally agree! When your custom could potentially injure/kill someone else because you have limited visability you need to alter it

It's just common sense. If you cannot see properly, make the necessary adjustments. If you feel you cannot, then you don't drive.

It has nothing to do with relligious beliefs or the type of vehicle being driven. It's just plain old common sense.

Yup, I completely agree. Good thing I take mine off when I drive, I'd hate to get you mad if I accidently bumped into you because I can't see.

I once got a ticket in my 1988 Firebird for having my giant Guidette Bow & big plastic Italian Horn hanging down from my rear view mirror because it "blocked my view" .....no more than a burka would!!!

110% agree. She should be held 100% liable and be ticketed.

Why? The OP is right, it is dangerous to drive with something thats almost covering your eyes blocking your vision, whoever thinks that is fine is wrong! She could of hurt someone.

Just wondering...did she say she couldnt see or are you assuming she couldnt see? I totally agree with you as a general statement but I also think that she is probably so accustomed to wearing the veil and driving that I am unsure if it would have made a difference in this case or any other. I do agree though that if something is obstructing someones view and is potentially dangerous it should be changed. However, this would be something I dont think people would be willing to change anyhow.
*I am shocked...I re-read what you wrote. she said she cant see?!?! ummm hello...get off the road. Thats just ridiculous! I thought maybe you all assumed she couldnt see. No if she cant see then she shouldnt be driving.

I was wondering the same thing. From my limited understanding of the cultural traditions there is no way a woman is allowed to drive from their culture.

But she's in traditional garb. Something doesn't add up.

That's not necessarily true. Saudi Arabia prohibits women from driving, or attempted to, I'm not sure but other places, women are permitted to drive, work, attend school, etc.

The veil and head scarf, is called many different things depending on location however the premise behind it is modesty and again, except for certain areas, it is up to the woman if she wears it or not.

Maybe in certain hard-line Muslim countries, but there are plenty of Muslim women in America who are embracing the burqa (or at least a hijab, which I think is just the veil) by their own decision. (for example, a friend from college who was an MD/PhD and practices medicine decided later in life to start wearing the hijab- I'm sure she is "allowed" to drive.)

Many women from that culture drive. And they don't even have to bring their husbands, or have permission to leave the house.

Re: Not meant to cause drama or to offend but RANT!

My mother can no longer drive because she has limited range of motion due to a back injury and arthritis. She cannot turn her head or her body to look in situations that require any other driver to do so. Her license has never been revoked, but she should not be driving and doesnt. If she cannot turn her head to see it isnt much different from this situation. Plain and simple - her vision/range of view is impaired and it is not safe. Had she hit a person or a child, I cannot even imagine the ramifications.
