Not Parenting Related....How Valuable is it to work 10 min fr home
10 minutes from home--you can tolerate the job, but it's not what you want as your career. Great benefits and you are supporting your family on the salary.

VERY valuable, IMO.
You have a better quality of life because your are spending less time commuting. You are saving money on gas. And the big one, you have more time to spend with your family.
But, if you are going to be miserable at the job, then it wouldn't be worth it, IMO. If it's just tolerable - you have to consider how long until it becomes it intolerable and if it's only a few months, is it worth it?

Totally agree. If you are not miserable and it's doable then I say stick with it. I realized that I don't need some big career to feel important. I need a good job with good people and a good paycheck. What comes after work is what makes me feel worthy in life! Good luck!

If it were for me, I'd do it since I decided to get off the "career track" and go on the "mommy track" and being close to home would be crucial to me. If it were DH I think he'd do it unitl he got back into what he wanted career wise, but it wouldn't be a long term thing.

I agree.... If you can't afford to hold out for something you really enjoy doing then I would just take this job until I could find something else.

absolutely! I don't love my job, but I love working 15 minutes from home and I love most of the people I work with.

If it has great benefits and is supporting the family, I would do it. Could always do it until that career job comes up.

Re: Not Parenting Related....How Valuable is it to work 10 min fr home
I agree with everyone. I am in the same situation. I work 10 minutes from home. At work I am 5 minutes from daycare and 10 minutes from my daughter's school. I don't consider my job a "career". It is just a job I have to pay the bills. Right now it is very convenient for me and I don't think I would look for something else until at least my 2 kids are in fulltime school.

I would do it in a heartbeat and you actually might grow to like what you will be doing. It might not be your ideal job but being so close is so nice. You can also save money on lunch and go home or do some light chores like laundry or what you or even spend time with Aly if you have a babysitter. Worst case you quit and find something else.

Re: Not Parenting Related....How Valuable is it to work 10 min fr home
When I was looking for a job after DS was born, it was a must that I work close by the house. I'm so grateful I did. Even though the job is 15 minutes from the house, it takes 45 minutes door to door with daycare and traffic.
Is this for you or your dh? Would you be dropping off/picking up from daycare?
I would definitely take a less then ideal job closer to the house, then further away. If it is for you, you will be working there for less then a year b/f going on maternity leave. I would say take the job, and keep looking, if it isn't your ideal job. I'm a firm believer that 95% of job satisfaction is who you work with and the conditions you work under - so if all of that is fine, maybe this job will turn out better then you hope!

I definitely agree with everyone, I'd just want to know how bad would the commute be otherwise?
ETA: I work about 10 min from home and it's fantastic! I spent a year commuting to the city on LIRR and I hated life, but I also didn't like the job either.
