not sure if this exists...(kitchen cabinet/counter thing?)
we're having an architect come to check out the house and discuss plans for our renovation next week. our plan is to change our LR into a DR so that we won't have to have a table in our teeny tiny kitchen. BUT I would like to have some seating in there still. I'm envisioning some kind of counter top that you can have stools in front of but that also has cabinets above and below. Does this exist? We don't want to spend a ton of money on this, as down the road a few years we'll put money into redoing the kitchen.

yes.... my dad made something like this custom for my mother...
it's a peninsula that juts out (but you can easily put it along a wall) and it's cabinets below that aren't standard base cabinet depth, a granite top, and then cabinets above...
Not sure if you can do it with stock cabinets though unless you used upper cabinets as the base cabinets and then raised them up somehow.

Most peninsulas that are designed for eating have some sort of cabinets under them. I'm trying to find pics of exactly what you're looking for.
Here's a peninsula with cabinets under it. With a peninsula, the doors would go on the opposite side of the seats, since you would have to move the seats to open the doors.
EIK with peninsula and just one cabinet on the wall.
This one has doors on the side where the chairs would go:
Peninsula with cabinets above, and room to eat on (assuming the clutter was removed.... )

If you are limited on space, maybe you can put upper cabinets on the bottom, under the island to save space?

My bro re-did his kitchen and put a little kitchen in his basement - so he took his old kitchen cabinets (the upper ones) and made an island out of them downstairs. It looks great! You could use those bottom cabinets for items that you don't use every day. Great idea if you're going with stock cabinets.
I will say I think you should go custom anyway - they will really maximize your space. I kick myself DAILY for not doing custom cabinets.
