not sure what to do about DS sleeping during the day
DS is 2 1/2 weeks old and has been pretty good about waking up at night - he only gets up to eat or be changed and i can usually put him down again *fairly* easily.
however he won't go down for the night until 10:30 or 11pm!! i think this is because he is up from about 8am to 11am and then sleeps for most of the day until about 6pm, waking only to eat. i have tried everything to keep him up after feedings but all he wants is to sleep again.
and of course that means his 'witching hour' lasts from 6 or 8 pm until he goes down at night, where nothing really soothes him.
i guess i am just curious to know what other moms did to combat this... should i do something else to try and keep him up during the day, or is it just something i have to ride out?

That was pretty much how my DD was at that age. They just need so much sleep. I think it's like 20 hours a day. There was nothing we could do to keep her up. Her witching hour was around 6-8 as well and she wasn't going to bed until 11pm. Eventually he'll start sleeping less during the day.

I agree with all of this. My DDs would go to bed for the night around 11pm at that age too. Also, a lot of the books I've read (and from what I've experienced) describe the "witching hour" as most commonly occurring around that very time--unfortunately, that's usually right at dinner time!!!
It's odd because you think, babies=bed by 7pm! That took a while for us, but their bedtime did get incrementally earlier. I would say between 3-6 mos. they were going to bed by 8pm, if not earlier.

Re: not sure what to do about DS sleeping during the day
Unfortunately, right now your only job is to feed, change and rock him when he needs it. There is no keeping a newborn up at 2-1/2 weeks old. They are still feeling their way in this bright new world. For us, a real 'Bedtime' routine didn't happen until 3-4 months when he was better aquainted with night and day routines.

I agree with the PP. Not much you can do at that age. DS "woke up" around 4 weeks.

At this age they need their sleep. DH calls it the "boring" stage I call it the best stage

Re: not sure what to do about DS sleeping during the day
Sounds like your DS's schedule is just like mine! When I feed and change DS at night I don't turn on any lights and I only use a nightlight and I don't talk to him during his feedings and changings. Then, during the day I talk to him during feedings and changings. He still sleeps a lot during the day which is what he needs. The dr. said not to wake him to feed him but if we wanted to pick him up and move him from his swing, to holding him, to the bouncy seat to disrupt his sleep then he might start to sleep more during the night and less during the day. I think that dispite all of this, babies need to sleep a lot and it's a matter of waiting out the time before they get on a schedule.

Re: not sure what to do about DS sleeping during the day
My DS (4wks) doesn't sleep to much during the day but still is up to 10 or 11 but then he sleeps until 6 or 7 - so my dh and I get a full nights sleep. When they are so little they need to sleep when they want to. It helps them grow

Re: not sure what to do about DS sleeping during the day
LB... that's what mommies talk about when they talk about sleep deprivation.
NB have no schedule yet. They still mix day and night.
You cannot keep DS up during the day to try to make him understand what is day and night. He is way too young.
It will get better over time. IT DOES!!!!

Basically what everyone else said.
The only thing I wanted to add was for you to try and take naps when he's napping during the day. I know there are a million other things to do - but enjoy this time now because the naps are few and far between when they get older, and since he is waking at night - you need your rest too!

Re: not sure what to do about DS sleeping during the day
When DS was about that age his only real awakeness was usually between 4 and 6. Other than that all the kid did was sleep, eat, poop, pee, and repeat!
ETA - Don't doubt yourself. You are his mommy and you will do what you think is best! I tell Ryan all the time "You are my first and I haven't read any books, if I screw you up royally I'll pay for your first year of therapy."
