Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

Didn't seem to fit under pregnancy. I am in the middle of my third and final pregnancy. Due to 3 genetic blood clotting disorders I cannot take birth control pills or anything that has hormones in it. The thought of an IUD never sat well with me. I am done having kids at almost 41 years old, I want permanent birth control that I don't have to think about. This was an unplanned pregnancy. My husband was happy about it from the start, it took me months to feel excited. I am now, my kids are thrilled, but I am done having children!

I decided to do some reading about the Tubal Ligation that I requested of my doctor and am really excited about getting. I already know this baby will be born via c section due to the host of problems I have experienced. Well I came across something about Tubal Ligation Syndrome. It sounded pretty awful. I know the popular thought is well I had the kids so let husband get snipped but I would like control of my body and to know I won't ever be pregnant again. Not sure if that makes sense. Can others share your good and maybe not so good experiences after having a tubal?

Thank you in advance.

I can tell you my sister had one right after her third child. She had it done the day after she gave birth. She gave birth vaginally, so I'm not sure how they do it with a C section.
She had no complications from it.

Thanks Ali. The doctor and insurance company both said that it's pretty easy with the section since you are already open. Doctor assured me it won't delay my recovery. I hate reading stuff on line but just want to know what I'm in for. In fact my doctor isn't even billing for it I was told after I spoke with the insurance.

I am getting it done with my c section this time too. I remember my mother having it done (not during a c section) and there being a recovery period but my dr has assured me that it is no more than the regular c section recovery.
The only thing I have heard when I mentioned it to people is that "someone that someone knew" still got pregnant. I'm going to talk to my dr about this next visit.

I can't offer you experience but I wanted to validate what you are saying about tubal ligation syndrome. I am aware of it and it does happen, though uncommon. The biggest problem that would pose for you is that you would not be eligible for hormonal treatment if you developed the syndrome.

I had been contemplating getting my tubes tied for a while. Most people will tell you they had no side affects from tubal ligation and that they never heard of it. Most people also don't have all of the severe symptoms of pregnancy and health issues that I do either. I tend to have very severe response to estrogen/progesterone changes in my body during PMS and pregnancy which makes me more hesitant.

In the end, I was too hesitant to take the risk and it makes sense for all of us for dh to getting snipped. I will say that TLS is still very rare. It is probably worth it for you if DH getting snipped is not a option. The risk of getting pregnant again and blood clots while pregnant is more threatening than TLS.

Good Luck!

Re: Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

I had mine done after my second c-section. Aside from some bleeding, I've had no problems. Recovery was no different from the c-section. My ob/gyn was very clear that this is permanent and that it cannot be reversed. But it's what we wanted and I know it was the right choice for me

i had a tubal after my second csection because we knew we were done after two and I too have a host of clotting/autoimmune issues which would make a 3rd difficult...

no issues! The tubal added maybe 15-20 mins to my csection and maybe a bit of additional "pinching or pulling" paid post csection for a few weeks but nothing more!

I had one after my third baby. It added a few minutes to my section but did not add to recovery time. I will say, and my Dr denies it, that I swear I do have tubal ligation syndrome. My hormones are out of control sometimes. Poor dh gets the brunt if it all because i never take it out on the kids. For Jo reason at all I will yell at him, I get angry and feel like I just can't control my emotions. It's not like my normal PMS hormones. It gets bad. This all did not happen before the tubal ligation. Edited. I pressed send too soon. Anyway, my periods are way heavier than they used to be. I have to wear both a pad and tampon. I've never felt like this and I hate it. So yes it can happen. I don't know how rare it is but like I said my Dr denies it and says it's just from "getting older".

Your doctor may be on to something because I do not have my tubes tied but after having dc # 2 (he is 4 now and my last) I have all the symptoms that you describe. My periods are heavier than they have ever been.

A friend of mine has severe blood clotting issues which she had a very tough time controlling for a while. She ended up having a tubal as a freestanding procedure 8 years after she had her last child because her doctor insisted that it was absolutely critical to her health that she never get pregnant again. She has had no problems at all.

I plan on getting my tubes tied during my c section in May. Due to a previous uterine rupture, I am pushing it with this pregnancy. I cannot wait to not have to worry about an unplanned pregnancy again!

Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

i got mine tied after my 2nd in 2009. added a few minutes more to my C.

What i experienced:
my period changed a LOT
heavier, more cramps and longer
i was sick a week a before i would get my period.
very moody as well.

fast forward almost 5 years, 4 day period, 2 heavy days and spotting the last 2 days
no more cramps, moodiness has subsided.
i would say this started happening 3.5 years after they were tied.

i have heard stories about women getting pregnant with their tubes snipped and clamped.

i dont regret my decision, but in the beginning it was hard on me. in bed for almost a week with cramps.

Re: Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

I'm 31 and had it done after 2nd dc in october. I was ebf until a few weeks ago, so i haven gotten my period yet. I had a csection an my recovery was actually better than my first and only added about 10 minutes

I have to say after my first cd my period was awful....heavy crampy and much worse than before. It eventually got better. Your period changed as you age and after you have kids. For me the benefits of getting a tubal heavily outweighed the risk

Re: Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

I truly appreciate everones thoughts on this. I'm going to be 41 in September and as some have said, it's critical I am never pregnant again. I actually did experience about a year and a half ago, very bizarre periods. One lasted 2 months, very heavy and I had an ER visit due to weakness I experienced. Reality is I am getting older, in a few years my hormones were going to be out of whack anyway due to menopause and there would be no hormone therapy I could take. So I guess just best to chat with my doctor about the "what to do ifs", prepare myself and my family just in case. I get a bit weepy after child birth so I will be extra cautious that I maybe even more extreme. I'm already making certain decisions about life with a baby to make things easier on me and my family than I did the last 2 times. I had PPD with my first but I know what caused it and won't go there again. One day at a time I guess. I can't thank everyone enough. I certainly don'twant to sign up for something to hurt me but I get the benefit risk deal here.

Re: Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

I had my tubal a year ago when I had my 4th child. She was my only breech baby, I needed a section, it just made sense. Since she was my first section, I can't compare with my other deliveries. I was in pain but only took Motrin after the iv came out(same day I had her). They say the gas is worse than a regular section. I've always had a dull pain in my right side since the surgery. Its probably muscular. Its nice to not have to think about BC. I've only had one period because I bf, it wasnt bad.

Re: Not sure where to post this... tubal ligation question

I had my tubal ligation with my 3rd baby during my c-section. I have regretted it ever since. I know that I do not want another baby, however, my periods are ridulously heavy (6 years since I had it done). Super plus tampon AND a pad for 4 solid days. My PMS is insane... I have to take Xanax to keep from lashing out at my family. Its gotten so bad that I have seriously considered having an ablation done or a hysterectomy. I am weighing my options.

Get 2nd and 3rd opinions before doing it. Tubal Ligation Syndrome is very real and it stinks.

Same with me. I didnt have a section, I had it done 7 months after having #4. I had the same issues....raging hormones when i never even used to get PMS. Insane heav periods, went through a super tampon in less than 30 min. Had to have iv iron. It was AWFUL!!!

That said, it got MUCH etter after 6 months. Periods are normal, though ever few months it seems i get a lil extra feist, nothing like it was after the surger though.
