not TTC related- Nails question

I have been getting a manicure each week for the past 5 years.

With my recent teaching job, I am so busy both during my work time and free time, that I don't feel like taking the time out to get my nails done.

So, here's my question. One of my biggest pet peeves is when my nails don't look nice. It just really bugs me. I'm thinking of getting wraps so I would only need to go every 2 weeks.......... but I'm not sure where to start!

perm. french, silk wraps... I want to get what would be the least damaging, so I am wondering what you ladies think.

Also, be honest, is it completely not worth it to do even a SMALL amount of damage to my already perfectly healthy nails?

btw- I am aware of how vain I sound right now Chat Icon and I assure you that I am DEFINITELY not "that girl". My nails just happen to be extremely important to me! Chat Icon

I have permanent french. Honestly, I haven't seen my real nails in so long, I don't know how much damage they have. However, I can get them done ever 2 or 3 weeks. Much better then going every week----but the appts are an hour. Not sure if this info helps!

Re: not TTC related- Nails question

totally understand. actually im that way with my toes..i go every 2 weeks in the summer for pedis and even in the winter..just not as often.

i started going for mani's again b/c i like when they're shaped and neat.

I did the wraps for my wedding..i forget..i think maybe silk wraps.. and even though they were on for 2 weeks..it took a long time to get my nails healthy again. they were paper thin when they came off.

invest in NAILTIQUES ..i started with formula 2 for healing, then on to formula one. they keep your nails nice & healthy. then maybe go for mani's once a month if you dont have the time every week.

Stick to the manicures. I used to have perm french wraps for years. Well bc of my job I had to get rid of them. It took about 2 years to get my nails back to strength again.

Don't do it! It is cheaper, takes less time and is healthier to get manicures.

I do silks and they don't damage your nails unless you pull them off

Re: not TTC related- Nails question

I had silk wraps on my nails forever. I think silk is better for your nails than acrylic. I also found that when I did do acrylic and my nail broke, I lost my whole nail and it hurt! When I broke a nail with the silk, I just cracked off the wrap. The acrylic became my nail. But, when I took them off, my poor nails were in such horrible shape. They were so thin, they hurt. I love the way the perm french looks and sometimes I get tempted, but I wouldn't do it again. DH and I just bought a house, so I have cut back on my pampering and I do my nails myself now. After going for so many years, I just learned by observing. So Sunday nights is mani night during Desperate Housewives. I do get a mani once a month when I go for a pedi.

I would say if you do it to get the silk.

Is your's a perm. french too?

Also, when you have a perm. french, can you get them polished over in other colors if you choose?

yes i have the perm french. its actually called white tips in my place. they put white tips on the very end of your nail and then out pink acrylic over the whole thing. i had silk with gel for years and they always broke. for me, the acrylic stays better and i hardly ever lose a nail. i guess its different for everyone. its cheap and fast to do them. i pay 35 for a set and 18 for a fill.

Thanks for all the advice! Also, please bare with me because I am not very nail-knowledgeable and the people at my salon don't always understand me.

The silk and perm. french are 2 diff things, right? I always see people with BEAUTIFUL nails (which clearly aren't real Chat Icon ) and always wonder what they are.... (silk, etc)

yeah the silk is a piece of material that they put over your nail or a tip and then put gel and put glue and powder over it. acrylic is where they take like a paintbrush with the ppowder and liquid and paint your nail with it.

Re: not TTC related- Nails question

I've had silk, acrylic, pretty much everything.

I love the way they look, but they all destroy your nails. when you decide to take them off, your nails are a disaster for atleast 6 months.

After a while I get annoyed with having to go there every 2 weeks for an hour, plus dishing out the extra$$ for the fillins.

But I love the way they look, so I won't tell you not to do it. Because I'm sure I will do it again.

Right now, I just run on lunch and spend 20 minutes getting the $7 manicure.
