NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
My Absolute WORST Nightmare...
Good Morning America - LINK TO STORY
NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center
By ANNA WILD and MARA SCHIAVOCAMPO 3 hours ago Good Morning America An allegedly unlicensed New York City day care center is being investigated after an infant died on his first day under its care.
Karl Towndrow, who was 3 months old, was found unresponsive 15 minutes after being put down for his midday nap Monday at SoHo Child Care in Manhattan, police said.
Day care center owner Maryellen Strautmanis called 911, and dispatchers talked her through the steps of CPR until first responders arrived, according to police.
The cause of the baby’s death is unknown and no criminal charges have been filed.
“The parents are distraught, a little bit in shock, and they’re trying to get a handle on what happened,” John Tumelty, the family’s attorney, said.
“They want to find out what happened here. If they got a proper license and the reviews and the requirements were met, if it would be a different outcome, we don’t know yet.”
The center was shut down after Karl’s death, officials said. Strautmanis did not respond to ABC News' request for comment.
The center is unlicensed and had been owned and operated by Strautmanis for the past 14 years, according to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
Unlicensed child care providers aren’t subject to basic training requirements and background checks. The exact number of unlicensed child care providers nationally isn’t known.
Lynette Fraga, executive director of the nonprofit Child Care Aware of America, says parents need to be vigilant when deciding on day care centers.
“There are three steps I would recommend that families consider when they are seeking out child care: call, visit and revisit,” Fraga said.

How sad. My first thought is SIDS but obviously that has yet to be determined. I never understand why people would go with an unlicensed daycare.

NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
And that is why I pay a college tuition for our daycare. Accidents certainly happen, and SIDS is SIDS, but how was the child laid down for his nap? Were they following current procedures to prevent SIDS? With an unlicensed facility, there is no standardization and accountability in the same way that there is in a licensed daycare.
ETA: That is horrifying and I feel terrible for the baby who lost his life and the parents.

How have they been under the radar for 14yrs? This is unbelievable!
My heart goes out to the family.

most likely people do because of money. sending kids to a licensed daycare is a lot of money. I have 2 in full time and I pay over $25K a year for them to go there!
if the parents trusted the place I don't think it really matters if they were licensed or not. what's the difference from this place and finding a nanny or someone out of their house to watch your kids that you trust? also just because a daycare is licensed doesn't mean that they will follow all the procedures correctly.
Now if they lied to the parents saying they were licensed I would be fuming mad that I was lied too.
until the say cause of death I don't think them not having a license really matters esp if it was SIDS it could have happened at anytime at any place.

So horrible. It's definitely possible to find an inexpensive licensed daycare. So tragic.

NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
The baby was taken to Lenox Hill Healthplex in the village. DH works there and came home and told me about it Monday. He was devastated. He saw the mother just holding the lifeless body of the baby and everyone was crying. He said it was heart breaking and something he'll never forget. Prayers for the family

I have to disagree about having a license not mattering. There is a lot of specific training involved, state inspections (which ensure that regulations are being adhered to), background checks on all employees, environmental checks, etc. Also, if it is SIDS, while of course it could happen anywhere, there are steps to take to dramatically reduce the risk. An unlicensed center would not necessarily be trained in this. Just because a provided seems nice and trustworthy doesn't mean that they aren't mistakes that they're not even aware of.

Sounds like SIDS but what stood out ro me was them having to talk her through CPR over the phone. If they had been licensed everyone there would have to vebe cpr certified and recertification often.

I do agree. Something as simple as blankets not being allowed in infant cribs, no bumpers, babies being put to sleep on their backs only. My daycare has a ton of rules and regulations that they follow to the letter. Not saying all SIDS can be prevented but I'd feel better knowing my daycare provider is aware of and taking steps to mitigate any risk. I skimp and save elsewhere. She drank generic formula, but when it came to her daycare I only would consider the best...regardless of what it cost. Are unlicensed daycares even legal? How?

NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
I saw this story last night. So so upsetting. Here is more info from the news.
Nearly a year before a 3-month old baby died at an unlicensed day care in Soho, the city was tipped off about the illegal facility — but officials were unable to substantiate the claim and closed the case, officials said. The Department of Health was first made aware of SoHo Child Care in November 2014 after receiving a complaint. They inspected the site and talked with merchants underneath the day care, but were ultimately unable to find proof of a business. “An inspector went to the site and could not find any visible signs of a commercial child care operation — for example, there was no awning and there were only resident names listed on the doorbells,” the agency said, adding that “no one answered the bell” at 67 Greene St. After all of these measures, the inspector determined that the tip was unsubstantiated and that the day care was just a private apartment, with no visible signs of business. On Monday, 3-month-old Karl Towndrow was found unresponsive at the SoHo Child Care center. Law enforcement sources believe he later died at a hospital of sudden infant death syndrome, otherwise known as SIDS. The day care was shuttered and served with a cease-and-desist order hours after Karl’s death, health officials said. City inspectors visited the center Tuesday “to ensure that the program remained closed.” Maryellen Strautmanis, the longtime operator of SoHo Child Care, will likely be fined for running an unlicensed day care, but not arrested, sources said.

How sad and tragic. And how despicable that as an advanced society parents still have to make these kinds of choices to find affordable child care. Having to return to work at 3 months is bad enough but having to place your child somewhere like this just so you can afford it, and then to have this result is not acceptable. We need to do better for our children and families.

Absolutely heart breaking. Sounds like SIDS but only time will tell. I was licensed provider for over 10 years. Part of becoming licensed is taking a course every 2 years on SIDS and CPR. A lot of people don't know the recommendations to prevent SIDS. So sad for those parents many prayers for them.

NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
Beyond heartbreaking
The unlicensed part really just adds insult to injury, so to speak. Could have happened to anyone, anywhere. For all we know, had the mom stayed home one more day, it would have happened to her. Just awful, all the way around.
