NYC Budget cuts?? And definitive answers yet??
I know there are going to be cuts I want to know exactly from where??
Gee maybe the DOE could first stop with the 5MIL in courier services to start before they think about cutting jobs or taking services away from my kids

Re: NYC Budget cuts?? And definitive answers yet??
today my principal said the cuts would "devastating". im nervous! i cant imagine having any more kids in my classroom or any less resources... what a disservice for the children.
they should:
*cut ARIS/ACUITY/SCANTRON *cut the Quality Review/Progress Report
that would save quite a few million $$$

Did anyone read the email from Klein today? 1.3% in February.
BTW: Progress reports get released on Monday. They changed our peer group to all of the new charter schools. We got an F.

Re: NYC Budget cuts?? And definitive answers yet??
The budget cuts were about 1.3% (so for a school around 600 students, that means about 63,000) now and in September it will be 2.5%.
They are making major cuts at Tweed and they eliminated the city-wide grade 4 science test. In addition, they cut monies for grading the ELA and Math assessments.
Quality Review has already been downsized; the Brits are going back to England. It was never supose to be long term. Their purpose was to train DOE staff to conduct the quality reviews.
I also see Acuity falling off the charts in the coming years.
However, accountability isn't going anywhere. The education system in America is becoming more data driven instruction.

Progress reports aren't supose to be relased until later in the week. And how do you know your grade already? Principals were directly ordered to embargo the grade until further notice.

progress report grades were supposed to be made public to the school staff, embargoed to the public.
and "devastating" as in about 500 eople losing their jobs. i hope we dont have any mid year layoffs!

Dh's school got an F. they found out on Friday... the prinicipal had a meeting to break the news. she told them all the info. would be in the papers on Monday. they were so surprised to get an F because they are a decent school, but according to the DOE's stupid formula, even if you are doing well, but you don't improve by a certain percentage, you fail.

That whole system is absurd. The school on the floor below us, where the kids all but hang from the light fixtures, got an A last year. We got a B, which, to be honest, was a lot better than I think we deserved. A major snowjob went on with our Quality Review.

An email came on late Friday afternoon, requesting that principals continue to embargo the grades until further notice. They are not going to run in the paper on Monday as suggested. Who knows what is going on!
I like the quality review. I think I am in the minority here though. I think it is a good way to look at what you are doing and apply a number to it. We have two of the toughest reviewers in the system come to our school in the last two years. But, we have taken their suggestions and it has made a difference in how we are using data. It is interesting to look at how many different ways reports can be run. However, we have a great Data specialist and he so nerds out with these reports.
The purpose of Acuity is to look at skill areas and differentiate instruction in the classroom. Eventhough I have done a similiar thing in the past, I like that there is a formal assessment.
The key to doing well is moving your level 1 kids to a 2 and your 2s to a 3. If you are doing that, then your school should be fine.

I think that the Quality Review would be a better tool if the reviewers just dropped in- my principal chose the teachers who would be visited- so of course he picked the better teachers. He picked the teachers who were interviewed- so of course he'll pick the ones who toe the party line. It was all a show and meant nothing. As it is now, it's totally inauthentic.
As for using data- I don't have an issue with it, but like everything else, it's time comsuming. I feel like I'd be a better teacher if I didn't have to teach so much, and I don't even do as much as some of my colleagues, who do Saturday Academy, and the SES programs till 5:30 most days. And it would be nice if Acuity actually WORKED for all of us. For the money, it should be flawless.

Lol. Then my principal's in trouble, b/c he told half the staff that we got an 'A'. We also did well b/c we got more parents to turn in their surveys.
I heard 1.3% in Jan/Feb, but I don't know if it's another 3% in Sept or if the total of all the cuts will equal 3%. But whatever the percentage is, the kids are getting screwed. My school is going to have to lose people next fall.

Don't worry about it too much because the City Council will just reinstate a portion of the money in the summer. This happened last July and we got back enough money to keep 3 teachers.
But we still had to trim the fat. We ordered less materials this year and are doing just fine. Teachers have just become more careful with paper and breaking technology.

Not sure about that. We just had a staff meeting today, and my principal basically told us that the cuts would be 5% next fall and more in 2010. They're definitely going to have to excess staff.
