NYC DOE maternity leave
The DOE pays for 6 weeks maternity leave for a natural birth and 8 weeks for cesarean. For those that had a natural birth what are some of the reasons for that the DOE accepts to extend your pay for 8 weeks if you had a natural birth? I'm curious bc my payroll secretary said i can get 8 weeks paid if something is wrong with me.

To my knowledge... if you have a v-birth, you're only considered sick for 6 weeks pp. You only get paid for 6 weeks if you have the sick days in your CAR. (If you don't, you're SOL).
However, if you mysteriously get diagnosed with an illness (like pregnancy-induced sciatica), and you have the sick days, the DOE will pay you.

Maternity leave is NOT paid. You can use the days in your CAR to take up tp 6 weeks for V birth and 8 weeks for C/S...However there is FMLA that you can go out on as well! However FMLA is un-paid as well!

You are not SOL if you dont have enough days. If you don't have the days in your CAR, you can borrow up to 20 days.

and then also use a 30 day grace pay period that gives you partial pay.

This is all true and I had a c-section and still only got paid for 6 weeks even though originally I was told I could borrow 10 days to get pied for 8 weeks.

The top is true but I don't understand why you couldn't borrow those days if you hadn't already..it really burns me that we don't get a paid maternity leave and that we have to use accrued days..but that's another story..I was told the same about an illness, but unless it's truly legitimate, it is not worth being shady over...it's hard to go back and I will not deny it for a second, but it's not worth getting bitten in the behind, especially in the environment we are working in now...

agree with everything you wrote.
it also burns me that depending on how savvy your payroll secretary is, it seems you get different benefits.

True. But you have to buy the days back or go back to work with negative days. Since we get one day a month, it'll take two school years to earn the days back!!
Bless the DOE
