What exactly is child care leave? Does it mean I can take up to 4 years of leave and then be guaranteed my position at my current school? I know its unpaid, and insurance is not covered any longer.

Yes that is basically what it means. I think it is 4.5 yrs and if you have another child you get 4.5 more yrs. Sweet deal, if you can afford not to work.
My mom had my brother and I 4.5 yrs apart and was home until I went to Kindergarden. Worked well.

You can take up to four (or five) years and your position is kept within the DOE but I don't believe it is in you school specifically. I think it might be region or district??? Not sure.

Yes- you have a job, but it may not be in your school. Since regions/districts no longer exist, for the most part, I am not sure how that would work. We are now in a network, but my school in the Bronx is part of a network with schools in Manhattan and even Brooklyn.

Seriously? But I should't be surprised. It will really be terrible if they get their way with sick days- 5 instead of 10- because it will really be hard to save for maternity leave.

If you are appointed in your specific school, then yes your position is held for you there.

unless you get excessed in the meantime, then you return to the ATR pool. this happened to a teacher in my school who took the 5 years. she planned on coming back in september, but got excessed the June before and had to interview to find a new position in another school.

Yes, you do return to your school. However, you may not have YOUR position, or class, or grade.
