NYC DOE Teachers come in
DH works at a high needs school that has not been performing well over the last few years. HIS ratings are good, but the school on the whole is not.
There is talk about a new prinicpal firing ALL of the teachers in the school and bringing in ALL new. Is this possible? Can this happen?

Re: NYC DOE Teachers come in
My DH is in a lousy school too. He was told that a new principal would come in, the old one knew she had to get out. He spoke to someone and they said they would get all new adiministartion to try to correct the school first. Hope this helps. DH just got a new principal last week, and he said the new principal looks like he is really trying to fix the school. Is your DH tenured? Feel free to FM mail me. Dh had his first meeting as a school today w/ the new principal.

Re: NYC DOE Teachers come in
yes, usually all staff at "failing" schools will be "excessed" when the new principal comes in. however, they will usually hire a few of the teachers back.
those who dont get hired back will go into the ATR pool and can apply for openings in other buildings on the open market.
this happened to a friend of mine who worked in an awful neighborhood in far rockaway. she transferred to an awesome school in forest hills.

Also, just remember that being fired/layed off is different then being excessed in the DOE. Before you even become an ATR teacher you are in excess. So just like the previous poster said he would go into open market and start looking for a new school. If he does not find one by the start of the new school year he will then be placed in ATR status which means that he will go to an assigned school in his district. This assigned school can switch every week. Its basically like being a sub. While this really stinks, he will be getting full pay and benefits. He is still part of the DOE.

Re: NYC DOE Teachers come in
thank you for the responses!
While I know that it would stink to have to go from school to school, I think what he is most concerned about is remaining on payroll, which from what I can tell, he would. So that is OK then.
It is just frustrating because he is a good teacher in a failing school
He has had tenure for six years. This is his tenth yr teaching in that building.

Right- so being FIRED does not mean excessed. In order to fire a teacher you need just cause if they are tenured..correct? So for someone to say that they are going to come into a school and "fire" all the teachers would be impossible. Right? Esp. the ones that have satisfactory ratings and are tenured?

Re: NYC DOE Teachers come in
My DH who just went thru this was told that the only way they excess all the teachers is if the school closes and they reopen it and then they decide if the are going to rehire you. Everything else is true, if you are tenured , going school to school etc Hope this helps.

Re: NYC DOE Teachers come in
I am in a failed school and was told Friday that we are closing! I am in Far Rocaway and have spent my entire career 13 years at ths school! I can't believe I have just lost my job security and have to start over from scratch! Is not fair! The DOE did nothing to help and a change in admin should have been their first defense....not this!

I am so sorry! Will you at least get a paycheck until you find a new job?

Ugh...as ATR will you be paid? Benefits?
Teaching is becoming a very scary profession! I cannot believe that I spent 6years getting certified and am graduating this month into a profession riddled in turmoil.

Yes paid with benefits but every week you are assigned a new school in the district until you find your place in a new school.
