Yes, I have started week 3. I'm not following HH, I sort of made up my own. I don't know how I'm going to survive the training. This will be my 2nd, ran it in 2006. Good luck w/ your training.

Thanks! Do you run with a group or solo? And how closely did you follow your schedule in '06? I'm so busy this summer/fall, so I'm already nervous about fitting in all the long runs, especially those midweek.

I am starting today! I know I'm a bit late to be starting, but my shin was bothering me for a while, and then I was traveling for work for a bit. I'm hoping to jump right in and not have any complications, otherwise I might have to defer it to next year. Wish me luck!!!! And good luck to all of you! I did it last year and its AWESOME!

Most of my running is done solo unfortunately. My friend runs with me once a week for one of the shorter runs, but since I have to go so early (I have 2 toddlers and work full-time), it's tough to find people willing to head out that early. In 2006, I trained and fundraised for Team in Training, so I followed the schedule pretty closely. I know what you mean, I'm wondering how I'm going to get in all the longer runs. I find for me, the best thing is going early, I know it's done and I don't have to spend all day stressing over how to fit it in. Do you have a treadmill or access to a gym with one? Doing the weekday runs on the treadmill might help you squeeze them in better. As long as you try to do 1-2 runs per week outside, you should be fine. Are you following a schedule?

Thanks! Just got back from a 3 mile run (so nice running in the rain!) and I feel great! It's definitely too early to know if my shin will be ok...but its a good start!

I go to a chiropractor who does active release techniques (a.r.t.) and it's helped me with numerous aches and pains... you should look into it. It's a soft tissue treatment. Great job on your run!!

Re: NYC Marathoners
i do my long runs around here in my town..we live near a lot of north shore beaches so i usually map out whatever the long run is to end at a beach-and luckily my brother-in-law picks us up. it helps a lot to not have to do a loop which for me gets redundant and boring. i run with my brother and sister who will also be doing the marathon with me and we go VERRRRYYY early in the morning on saturdays.

Re: NYC Marathoners
i've been doing my long runs on the west side highway, but this weekend i have to do a 9 miler, so will probably do 1.5 laps around central park.
is anyone incorporating sprints? i'm doing HH novice 1. sprints scare me, but i want to increase my pace, and know that's the best way to do it.

Re: NYC Marathoners
I have to go reeeeeallly early too, but have to go solo, which stinks because it's starting to get dark later now in the morning. So not sure how I'm going to do that when the runs get super long, I like to drive to the bethpage bike path when the mileage gets really high since the path is nice and even - running the slanted roads is terrible for the joints! The only things is I don't know how safe that path is really early. Last time I trained, I didn't go as early and was with people.

Right now, no. Only because I've had some minor foot issues and I don't want to push it this early. I have been doing some tempo runs once per week, but for now, that's it. Just go easy and don't overdo the pace. Even if you just throw in a couple of 800 meter (1/2 mile) or 400 meter (1/4 mile) laps at a faster pace, that's good. You're lucky you are near Central Park, would love to train there!

ugh i know about the mornings staying darker until later. i hate that. and forget it, by october it will be worse. is the bike path well-used? are there enough people around for you to not be too alone? i don't know, i feel like now more than ever the world is crazy i would not feel safe alone if it's dark and not on a well-lit, busy road. but i know it's hard when you have kids, etc, and don't have the choice of when and where to go as you want. is there anyone at all that would go with you? i know my sister and i literally ran up and down the main road in our town b.c there are dunkin donuts, 7-11's, gas stations etc open at all hours, it's well-lit. it is BORING but kind of the safer alternative. the other alternative is a tread mill but i know i could never do a long run on that! some people have though. just be safe out there!

Re: NYC Marathoners
Not doing nyc this year, but my long runs are usually loops...I have loops upto 9 miles around my neighborhood and just combine them as the numbers go up. My 20 runs, I do one big route...but it is on a weekend when I don't have to work or do anything. I've also heard, and have wanted to try, having someone drop me off 20 miles away!

Instead of sprints...try fast finishes...every other long run, pick up the pace to close to race pace for the last 1/4 of the run.
You can also try tempo runs on your midweek runs. Slowly start to build up pace so that by a 1/3 of the way into run you are at race pace or even faster. Hold the pace for the middle 1/3 of the run and slowly ease up at the end.
Good luck!

I have even thought of starting the run on the treadmill, then going outside once it's closer to daylight. I usually loop around my neighborhood when it's super early, this way, I'm always close to him and I can store drinks in my backyard or on my steps in the front. I have a 2-mile loop that I repeat a few times, and going around my street is almost a mile. I know...Oct....it sucks with the darkness. My brother is training too, but he is on a different schedule with work. Sigh....

Those are great suggestions! thanks so much. I definitely like the one of getting dropped off the distance away that you have to run. With subways, it's easy to go to another borough. I should probalby start running the bridges anway. Just wish it wasn't so humid out! Winter training is so much easier!

Don't forget to incorporate some hills or hillwork into your training. The NYCM includes 5 bridge crossings and steady inclines along 1st Ave and 5th Ave/CPE. The bridge crossings will wear you out the most if you don't prepare for them!

ITA! The 59th street bridge is at mile 15 and it never seems to end...its all uphill! I defnitely need to add more hill work this year!

The Pulaski and the Queensboro are the toughest b/c they're almost like a 1-2 punch. They're less than 1.5 miles between each other and you've already got about half the race under your belt (or your feet) at that point. The Q-Boro, as you said, is at Mile 15 and at Mile 16 you're still on the bridge!
