NYC questions
We're going to NYC when we're up there for Thanksgiving. We're going to be going to Macy's to see Santa, Rockefellar Center to walk around, and want to go to the Museum of Natural History. I'd also like to go to one of the parks in Central Park for the kids to play. I know it will be a little cold outside, but whatever! Maybe do something else the kids would like Christmas related?
How would I go about mapping out what we'd like to do and where it's located? We went there for Labor Day weekend and were pretty much clueless on where we should go and where it was.
Also, can anyone tell me where there is a good pizza place in that area for a slice of pizza?
I'm trying to be a little more prepared this time so we don't walk around aimlessly wasting time.
Thanks so much!

Re: NYC questions
If you want to take public transporation, you can put the address in www.hopstop.com to figure out how to get there.
ETA: are you going to all these places in one day? i ask because they're in completely different neighborhoods (Herald Square, Rock Center and the upper west side). I wouldnt really think you'd be able to fit anything else in...

Love Bryant Park around the holidays and it's within walking distance from everything. Close to Time Square, tree, etc.
Don't forget to go to Toys R Us in Time Square and then walk to Hersheys and right across the street from that is M&M Mars.
Were you thinking about getting tix to see the Radio City Xmas show? It's right there too.
Oh... and get Hot Coco at Serendipity

Re: NYC questions
For pizza I recommend Koronet Pizzeria on Broadway between 110th and 11th. I've only had it once (many years ago) but the slices are HUGE and I still remember it as being delicious today.

Re: NYC questions
if you have two days I would do Day 1 - Macy's, Bryant Park ice /skating rink then Rockefeller Center/St Patrick's these are all pretty much considered the same part of town so it's easy to do them. Also check out to see if Grand Central Station has anything going on, sometimes they have a train show or the holiday shopping booths
then day 2 do Central Park, maybe check out the zoo and then the Museum since they're close enough together.
Just walking around you'll see enough places for pizza, snacks, and vendors on the street
Have fun!

Agreed, and I'd add Times Square Toys R Us and the Hershey's store to day 1.

And is much closer to Macys than Central Park. It's also very close to Times Square.

Re: NYC questions
We only get 1 day in the city.
We definitely want to do Macy's and The Museum. My son wanted to go there last time but we didn't get to. I know they're in opposite locations, but we told him we could go. I'm not sure what to do in between or afterwards?
I thought Bryant Park is by Times Square and St. Patricks is by Rockafellar Ctr.? Where is Macy's and Central Park Zoo to all of this? So confusing. This is what happens when you grew up in NY but never going to the city.

Re: NYC questions
We already did the Times Square area. Well, FAO Schwartz and Toys R Us, etc.
How long of a walk is it from place to place? I know we might have to take transportation to get to the museum, but other than that?

Re: NYC questions
First, there is no such thing as bad pizza in NYC (being OOS now, I appreciate this more and more) I loved this place Patsy's-but that is 34th and 3rd, so might be out of your way.
You might think this is insane because it will be crowded, but I love it-FAO Schwartz! 58th and 5th. I love walking around and looking at the incredible toys!
And definitely Central Park Zoo. That is in the upper 60's/5th I believe.

Macy's is right by Penn Sta-34th and Broadway, I would like to say.
Central Park Zoo is on the UES-upper 60's and 5th.
I forget exactly where the Museum of Natural History is (I think west side), I always go to the Met. Central Park Zoo is on the East side, but not far on the East side like 3rd ave-KWIM?

OMG Serendipity! If you do that, Dylan's Candy Bar is two doors down!
60th and 3rd.
But if you are on the West Side, this may not work.

Re: NYC questions
Can't do any shows, kids are too young to sit still and enjoy them.
I just wish I could figure out where everything is? Is there a map of the city that shows the blocks and streets that I can print out and map out where we want to go and see what is feasible? Remember, we're going to have a 5 and 3 yr old with us.
I'll have to write down all of these places and see what we can do. There's just too many choices and not enough time!

Re: NYC questions
Once I know where I all the places I want to go are located I used MTA Trip Planner to find the trains. I like it because it helps me plan routes around any construction or service changes

Re: NYC questions
You should get a guide book--if you don't want to buy one, try your local library--just don't write on the map.
You could proabably also buy a map from a bookstore near you.
The Museum of Natural History is huge & exhausting. Your kids may be wiped out after that & Macy's unless, your son just want to see something specific like the dinosaurs.
