NYC Schools?
Anyone here have kids in NYC Schools? Or teach in one(I think we have a bunch).
We opted for fully remote (32% of our school did so far too) , but the in school options seem to be a $hitshow. And now the teachers union is asking questions/making demands (which I think are justified!) and teachers may not return if they don't believe it's safe...
Just wondering everyone's thoughts and plans.

All school districts are currently going through this same $hitshow regardless of what district leaders tell the general public.

Considering someone once saw a custodian clean the toilets with the same mop and water that he used to just clean the floors and we never had soap in the bathrooms, I have very little faith.

I am sure.
I feel so bad for them - parents demanding more in person, parents demanding less in person, parents asking the same questions that were clearly answered in all communications a million times. I've listened to all 3 of our forums and I am so impressed by how well they have kept it together...
This doesn't seem like an easy feat (nor did I think it would be when Cuomo said we could open...) and really, even though our numbers are low and incidence in kids has been low - who really wants to be the one to test this?

Re: NYC Schools?
We opted for blended. Right now, it seems it will be in-school 2 days a week, remote 3 days a week.
we are making Ds a corona kit, with sanitizer, soap, disinfecting wipes, and paper towels. so he can wash his hands, clean his desk, do all he can to keep safe because all those items are lacking in school.
he also knows not to take off his mask except for lunch, which he's pretty good with.
luckily, DH is still working form home, so we will be opting out of afterschool (if it happens)
i am beyond afraid, but know he needs the in-school interaction.
i feel awful for all the teachers who are going to have to keep three groups and the remote kids all on one schedule and moving together through brand new subjects. if things get really bad, i will either ask to work part -time or quit to keep him where he needs to be.

Re: NYC Schools?
My son's school is phenomenal. 90% of his school opted for the blended learned. He did a zoom call on Monday and did 36 talking points in 46 minutes.
My son is in middle school, so we can deal with the rotating, I am not going to say that it doesn't suck, because it does but we have to do what we have to do right now.
They're doing a A/B/C/D schedule (D being fully remote). My son is cohort A so he is going as follows:
Week 1: Monday/Wednesday Week 2: Wednesday Week 3: Tuesday/Wednesday
Because I can only laugh at this point, being that school is supposedly starting 9/10, Week 1 actually starts with Thursday so my son won't actually go back until 9/16

People need to ASK questions at their forums. Keep asking if the questions are not answered. I find my work district paraphrases questions, but doesn't really answer them if that makes sense. Ask your teacher friends what concerns they have about their buildings plans as many of those deal with health and safety.

Not that it makes it better, but we were told if kids choose remote they most likely won't have teachers from their own school.

NYC Schools?
I was all for blended learning until the town hall meeting with principal. It makes my heart hurt thinking of how these poor kids will go back with all these restrictions. Masks all day only off for lunch, no recess at all, maybe once a week they can go outside on this small grassy area in front of the building. We are considering enrolling them in private school, since they have the means to open 5 days with proper guidelines. I just am scared of Cuomo closing the whole state and then I’m stuck paying for virtual learning!

that is also what i was told, and that while they may be certified, they don't normally teach that particular grade. it's basically who they have available that can do it.
and the actual class teachers will have to keep all their students together. i just don't see it happening.
DS is starting 5th grade, so this matters to honors placement for middle school. what are grades going to look like for this quarter/year? is it meets standards/doe not meet standards again? how does that factor into honors placement? meets standard is anywhere from 75% average to 100% average. a student who ahs a 75% average does not belong in honors classes.
just some thoughts that keep me awake at night. lol

I get it. My son is going into 8th. We are doing tutoring for the SHSAT, but we don't even know if they are going to have it....

I would think letting them out for some air in a socially distanced manner would be good- get out of that cooped up recirculated air for a bit, no?

Wow - our district is encouraging outside time as much as possible. Most mask breaks will be outside except for ones on an individual basis they have lead me to believe.

NYC Schools?
I think NYC Is a whole other ballgame than where I live (Suffolk County). The dense population, the amount of kids taking the subway and public buses, that would concern me. I mean, I would hope they have it drilled in them to not touch Subway poles, to not touch their mucous membranes, but I don't know. Riding a packed and germy subway, then headed into the classroom, and then exposing the teachers and other students? I don't think there is a real win win situation for NYC schools at this point. Suburbs on Long Island, entirely different story.

Well you know fresh air isn't bad.
Prisoners in the yard have armed guards keeping their behavior safe, so that is a silly analogy.
Here is my opinion as someone who has worked in elementary and preschools -
What IS bad is that a bunch of elementary aged kids outside for recess is very difficult to manage and keep socially distanced. The kids expect to run and play, often become rambunctious and run off. It would next to impossible to keep them safely socially distanced in that environment. They are typically monitored by just a few aides, many of whom in my experience are older women who wouldn't be able to physically manage that. Nor would anyone really. It's asking for trouble.

I forgot to mention that the recess area is under construction which is why they can’t go on the blacktop for recess. It won’t be ready until at least 2021. Before this pandemic the kids had indoor recess no matter the weather. They were asked to bring a book from home and sit and read in the auditorium. Forget it, that was another s$ show.

Ugh I wish!! There’s simply no room unless they close the street, which you know won’t happen. And I’m in what’s considered one of the best districts in queens. I’m so sad for all our kids.

Ok, so perhaps armed guards would help make sure they don't breathe on each other.....like they've been doing all summer. .

NYC Schools?
I love our school and we are in a blue ribbon school in what is considered the best district in queens. But, I am not comfortable sending my daughter for my own reasons (nothing to do with the school itself). we actually happen to have a lot of outdoor spaces at our school and even an outdoor classroom, so the kids will get breaks and be able to use that. I have a lot of questions and they get answered, I just think it's still a mess of a plan by NYC. And my teacher friends are telling me they are likely doing the sickout and school will not start on time.

All of the teachers in my school want to take the children outside when possible, but then the question became- “what are the children that are at home supposed to be doing while we’re trying to teach the children outside?” We’re going to be live streaming, so we’ll have no Wi-Fi outside.
As for going outside during lunch, there’s not enough staff to monitor all of the kids staying 6 ft apart and no one to wipe the playground equipment down after each child touches it.

NYC Schools?
the school i teach in is in queens, bayside area. 42% so far are full remote but there's expected to be alot more. Parents can change their decisions at any time and in the last week alot more opted for full remote. The DOE is completely and totally different than LI in so many ways. DD is going to pre-k on LI in our home district and i'm very very comfortable sending her. They are doing SO much and when I've asked my principal about all the things my home school is doing, the response is always "i'm not sure" "that's a good question" "We'll have to see after we start" and many other variations of I DON'T KNOW. Too many things have not been discussed or decided in the DOE. I'm not a big union person and at times i feel embarassed at the complaints because i prefer to just do my job, but I feel everything Mulgrew has said so far is totally warranted. People think he's being dramatic and extreme, but i've had like 5 faculty meetings and we know literally nothing.
To the OP: Just wanted to let you know that if we as staff don't know anything, then it's pretty bad. I don't even know my classes, don't know if I have any remote classes, I don't know my classroom, I don't know what they're doing as far as photocopies/handouts, etc. Also very important to note is that teachers were denied teacher's choice this year, which was the $250 that teachers get for supplies for their classrooms. So many will not be buying any disinfectants or anything because no funds to buy. I know my school got a case of hand sanitizer, but it won't last long.
