nyc teachers- do you wear jeans to work often?

I do all the time but always dark jeans with a nice tops and boots. MY h thinks its ridiculous that we have no dress code for teachers. Thoughts?

DH never (if so rarely) does. And he is a dean so he runs around alot. He is always in dress pants shirt & tie.

in june he will trade the dress shirt & tie for a polo. he maybe wears jeans 2x a year (snow, etc).

I think what you described sounds fine -he tells me some female teachers wear the juicy velor outfits to work. that is too far imo.

Only on art days or the day before a break or field trips or some random friday. So maybe 2 or 3 times a month.

I think it depends on the grade level and the teacher's age.

I worked in a NYC HS when I started teaching and I would never wear jeans (except PD days) to separate me from the students a bit - I guess it was my personal dress code. (there were definitely jean wearing teachers tough - and some ratty looking jeans - but mostly older teachers and men)


in MS and elem schools, I have seen jeans more often, since it's relatively easy to see who is the teacher and who is the student. One of our intermediate schools' PTA bought all the teachers embroidered polo shirts to wear with jeans on Fridays. It's a little uniform like, but I would love it!

I do! I dont see anything wrong with it.

I will say that many teachers i work with will wear sweat suits to work - sweatpants and a zip up i do not think it is appropriate to wear unless it is a trip day

I don't work in NYC but we are allowed to wear jeans almost every Friday. All other days are dress shirts/ pants or skirts.

There is no dress code in my school.......... I have seen it all...

Teachers in my school wear V.S. Pink sweatpants that say "PINK" across the butt Totally unprofessional..........


There's also a teacher who wears those juicy babydolls (you know, the strapless terrycloth ones)

Although our union says we have no dress code, in my school we follow the rule of business casual. We only wear jeans on trip days or you will occasionally see someone in a pair of dark jeans. I am all for wearing business casual. I think we do it out of respect for our admin too.

Yes, I do. Every Friday. However, not with sneakers and not with t-shirts.

Even in my jeans I am still more dressed up than most of my colleagues.

I wear jeans every Friday and sometimes on a Wednesday...but I always dress them up..never sneakers and a t-shirt...I save sweatsuits for trip days and days when the kids arent in.

In my school (Long Island) we pay $1.00 every week to wear jeans on Fridays. The money gets put into our sunshine fund to help needy families in the district

I only wear jeans on the day of an event (like during Homecoming Week when we have Jersey Day) or on Fridays when we do Jeans for a Cause (donate a few bucks for a charity).

Some teachers wear jeans more frequently but not many. My principal might take issue with it if more people dressed down.

I wear jeans probably once a week. Always dark ones with boots or flats and a nice sweater or shirt.

I wear jeans very often. I teach middle school. They are always appropriate - clean, not tight. I don't really see a problem with it. My students definitely see me as an authority figure whether I'm dressed down in jeans or dressed up.

I usually wear jeans once a week , snowy days and on school spirit days. I always try to wear a dark wash a cute top and nice shoes to dress them up.

At least 2x a week- once dressed up with a blouse and heeled boots and on Fridays its Spirit Day and we can wear them with sneakers and our school tee shirts


I have co-workers who wear yoga pants, jeans and tee shirts every sinle day and I think nothing of it.

Maybe because Elem. teachers get dirtier doing art projects, sitting on the floor and doing experiments that wearing less professional clothes is appropriate

I can't believe that people wear sweatsuits/tank tops/ tight clothes/ strapless tops etc. to work!!! I'd be so embarrassed to work with them! What kind of example are we showing kids?

Wanted to add...I am an elementary teacher and often end up sitting on the carpet working with kids or using paint/glue on projects and I still dress business casual (heels and all). I don't really think that's an excuse to dress like a slob.

In my school jeans are almost considered dressed up (NYC special ed school). Sneakers are the norm and encouraged, but most teachers do have to give chase on a frequent basis.
We are told, esp in the warm weather to make sure we don't wear low cut tops or short shorts or skirts (I can't believe how people need to be told this in a school setting!!!)

Rarely...snow days, trip days, some random Fridays and only Fridays and always dark jeans with nice shoes/nice top...I think if we want to be treated as professionals, we should look like them (at least most of the time). When I was student teaching, our coordinator would critique our outfits...that must have gone by the wayside considering some of the getups I see new teachers/subs in...
