NYC Teachers: Health Insurance Question
Hi all! My husband and I are trying to figure out which health plan to choose. Someone he worked with told him to go with GHI, we are expecting in January....do you all agree? There seems to be a lot of choices. TIA

Re: NYC Teachers: Health Insurance Question
Hello, I am in the same boat! My husband and I are expecting in January and I have Empire, so far I haven't had a problem with them. However, my friends have GHI and they tell me that it is better. My payroll secetary told me that changes are not to be made until november for health insurance. I have already called Empire about LIJ where I am delivering for medical coverage for my baby. I was advised that I would be taken a chance to changing health insurance due to paper work and processing time because delivery is unexpect. I don't know what the difference is with GHI, I do know that their isn't a difference from your paycheck because I check! What health provider do you have now???

Re: NYC Teachers: Health Insurance Question
GHI costs nothing, unless you have the optional rider, which is only $15.00 extra a month.
i just had a baby in July and they covered EVERYTHING!!! the only thing I paid was $300.00 for my deductible and you'll be paying a deductible regardless of what insurance you choose. all of my pre-natal visits were covered (only had ONE co-pay in the very beginning, which is awesome because you see your OB at least 9-15 times). Only had a few co-pays for sonograms and bloodwork.
GHI is great and there are a ton of docs that take the plan.

Re: NYC Teachers: Health Insurance Question
I currently have Empire through my job, but I plan on taking a leave of more than six weeks, and I don't want to pay for family insurance, so I figured it was better to switch now.
I was told that the enrollment period is mid october, and that it usually takes six weeks, as soon as I know we're covered, I plan to cancel my coverage.
Hope I'm doing the right thing, and all works out without too much hassle.
Thanks ladies!

I have GHI too.... and also dont pay for anything out of my paycheck and DH is under my insurance too.
Thats great to know that you didnt have to pay anything crazy besides the 300 deductible.
Do you know if c-section is covered? I just want to make sure its covered just in case in the future I need one...

i didn't have a c-section, but i would imagine that it would be covered. it's not really your choice to have one, and i've never heard of anyone not having a c-section covered under their plan.
