NYC teachers, talk to me about insurance.
I know that most choose the free GHI option. But does anyone have something different? What's the difference in the benefits themselves. Copay? Etc.
I'm also single so no family on my plan.
Thanks!

ITA!!! Definitely get the rider! They are a real pain when there is a mistake or problem, but then again most companies are. Thankfully haven't had too many issues.

How much is the optional rider? And what does it mean?
Sorry I'm not health insurance savvy.

Re: NYC teachers, talk to me about insurance.
It's for out of network coverage. If you have a doctor you love who doesn't take insurance or doesn't take GHI they pay out a certain portion. I think GHI also offers catastrophic which covers you for very costly things like if you were seriously injured or gravely ill outcrops and firefighters I know have it. There is extra coverage for mental health as well since many don't take insurance. All are not very expensive. It pays for itself and comes in handy!!

I know I'm in the minority but I recommend HIP. $0 copays for all in-network services. If you have standing appointments like PT you can't beat it!

See now I've had HIP with my previous job. Never had any issues. Although with my copay it was $25.
How much is HIP per month/paycheck?

Seriously. I get that getting referrals and staying in network might get people to think twice, but there's so many Drs that take it, it's really not an issue.

Yes, any doctor that takes GHI also takes HIP because they are both the same company ... Emblem Health...

Re: NYC teachers, talk to me about insurance.
If you go with HIP find out if you are going to need referrals. They are generally and HMO not a PPO like GHI so they may be within the Emblem family but have different rules. For me, who sees specialist often, that's a huge pain that I don't have to worry about. Ask around your school and maybe your union rep (if they're knowledgable about it) before you choose. Sometimes it's not so much about the money as it is convenience.

Re: NYC teachers, talk to me about insurance.
The HIP Prime HMO, which is one of two "free choices" from the city, does require referrals. However, my PCP's office is efficient, so it's not an issue.

NYC teachers, talk to me about insurance.
I actually checked the insurance I had from my other job. It was HIP Prime HMO. So basically it would be the same, except I wouldnt have to pay over $400 a month or have a copay. I think I'll stick with HIP. I didn't mind the referrals part, I don't have an issue with that my Drs are good about that stuff.
Thanks everyone for their input!

I left the DOE in 2012 but I had HIP the whole time and was always very happy with it- $0 copays and I always has a great selection of doctors, even when I moved an hour out of the city- finding dentists was a PITA but docs were no problem.
