NYCares Winter Wishes - answer a child's holiday wish

I know we don't want to think yet that the holidays are coming, but....

Earlier this week I noticed that this year's Winter Wishes thru NYCares is ready and accepting volunteers to answer letters again. I know a lot of people participated in it last year.

Please click here for more details.

I signed up on Tuesday, and got my letter today. A 6 year old boy wrote a Dear Santa letter saying that he loves Legowes (yes he spellt it that way) and trains. His letter said that "My dad is sorry". After seeing that the gift should be mailed to a woman's center in NYC, I'm guessing that maybe the father was abusive to him and/or his mother and they're living in a shelter.

Sad, but I can definetly cheer up his holidays by giving him Legowes. Chat Icon

I thought I remember someone here last year saying that they got a thank you note.. maybe it depends on the center that the kid is affiliated with.

I didn't get a thank you, I would have thought that was cute. Maybe its too much and they don't want to pay for postage and the person to coordinate sending all the letters back.

OH no doubt it's just I spend 50.00 between mailing and buying and didn't even know if they got it. I guess I could do return receipt requested

I' ve been doing this for several years now. When I can, I choose two letters, for younger children and one for older.

I did this last year as well and had a great time shopping for the two children I recieved....got a Razr scooter for the one boy and a Leap Pad for the other. Just didn't like the fact that I also never knew if my children got their presents...never recieved a thank you Chat Icon which would've been nice....but I guess I can understand why they don't send them.

I do this every year ... I'm surprised I didn't get an email telling me, so thanks for the heads up.

I usually do a child and a teen.

Hmmm, that's true, I was also disappointed that I never knew if the child/teen got their gift. I put a lot of thought into it and wanted tgo at least know they received the gifts.. I also remember calling a bunch of times to ask a question and never got anyone on the phone. It was frustrating. I LOVE the idea, but felt like I wasn't entirely pleased with the company.

I always send return receipt so I know the package made it to the place. I think they can't send TY's from the kids because it's supposed to be from Santa and I don't think each place gets a list of who sent their kids gifts.

Two years ago I had to call the place where my kid was getting her gift to ask a question and they were very responsive.

I think you've got to go into it knowing you wont' get a TY or probably great resposiveness if you need assistance, you've got to believe these places have got a lot going on aside from this.

I just signed up. When should I expect to hear from them? I noticed they asked for my mailing address and phone number. I normally don't like giving out this info.

I signed up on Tuesday - got my letter on Saturday. So I'd think you would probably get it late next week or early next week as they might be starting to get busy now.

They need your mailing address so they can send you the kid's letter. Chat Icon
