NYS Certification & Other States
What other states accept NYS Certification?
I was thinking about these states in particular
Pennsylvania Massachusettes Florida California
I thinking about moving from NY on my own, but I would need to be in a major city, I'm just not a Living in the sticks kinda girl

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
i know when i finished school in VA i was able to use reciprocity to get a NY license. i had to take the NY tests (LAST, ATSW, video, etc) and pay the fees for the tests even though i was already licensed in another state.
i would assume NY to another state would be the same. they probably won't accept your license, but would let you take their state exams to get the new license.
it was an easy process--i just had to wait for the test dates to roll around.

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
Look into each of the states to see what their individual requirements are.
From what I know, most states require you to take their teaching exams. (like the previous poser just said)
Do a google search for those states and teacher certification requirements! Good luck!

The only state on your list that I don't think has reciprocity with NY is California but I'm not 100% on it.

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
when i worked in CA, i had to take one CA state test (CBEST), apply through the county and redo fingerprints when I was offered a job (TB test too - but that may have been San Diego exclusive)
Just a warning about CA...they are in Trouble...I know San Diego city laid off a lot of teachers...i can just imagine that the whole state is suffering.

ITA - my DH is a teacher and had to do the same.
It's NOT a good time to be a teacher in California right now!

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
Pennsylvania is reciprocal. Ihad a PA license because I did my undergrad. in PA. I had to then take the NYS certification tests, but that was it. I am sure PA would make you take their tests for their certification. A MAsters degree is not required in PA.

So if I apply to jobs in PA I can get a job with my NYS certifictaion and then to the tests?
Or to i have to do all the tests before I accept a positon?

i'm not sure how that works... in NY they gave me a conditional provisional certificate that was only valid for about a year. i got a position in the meantime with that certificate and then i had the year to take the NYS tests and get the provisional certificate.
i don't know how it works from NY to PA. i do know though that I took a lot more teacher cert. tests in PA than i did in NY. they take the PRAXIS.

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
There are about 40 states that have reciprocity with NYS. California does not take our certifications, though they may accept administrative licenses. I believe PA, MA, and FL take NYC certs.

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
I know that in VA you just have to take a few tests (a reading one, and the Praxis I and II).

South Carolina will require you to take PRAXIS I and 3 PRAXIS II exams. You can accept a position while you complete those exams.
PRAXIS I is very similar to LAST exam IMO.
PRAXIS II: Content Area Excercises is the only other one I've taken and I took it as a student and had to really dig deep for some responses but as a teacher or even a student teacher...they would have come with experience for sure.

Re: NYS Certification & Other States
i took my ny tests before i graduated w/my bachelor's - i was hired for fl while still in ny, moved, took tests in the summer and during the school year and once all of my tests were completed, they granted me permanent licensure
there are a lot of big districts in fl, so getting a job shouldn't be too hard- though that doesn't mean you'll get a job in your preferred school/area
