Re: Obama caught in a lie! Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry AFTER he said he was "all for clean coal techonology"
Posted by dandr10199 You can give tax breaks to the coal industry as incentive to create cleaner emissions. The less emissions you have, the more tax breaks you get type of thing, not the opposite. that is the approach that would be effective. give them an incentive to do the right thing while maintaining jobs and lower electricity bills.
if you lower emissions by X amount in the next year, your tax break will be X% lower than the current year.
that is smart and a win-win scanerio!

even McCain said alternative engergy sources could bring over a million new jobs
we can't just fall back to the same old same old b/c the going gets tough
we need to move forward
that's right he did, but not at the expense of taxing a daily necessity to death
since when is COAL a daily necessity? i'm honestly curious about this. what do WE use in our daily lives, that require coal? i remember it being used to heat my grade school back in brooklyn, but that was in the 70's. I guess you didn't read the top of pg 2
“So what?” Americans in Manhattan, Malibu, and Miami might think. “We ain’t got no stinkin’ coal mines.”
Well, Americans happen to rely on coal for 48.7 percent of our electricity.
i wonder how we EVER managed.
ever managed what?

I like this idea just as much as giving tax breaks to US companies who keep jobs in the US and not ship them to China or India, etc.
companies care about the bottom line. not actual people. so if you incent them to "do the right thing", they WILL.

give big industry tax breaks AGAIN. while they get rich.

but do you realize that the alternative will cost thousands of jobs?
and that *has* worked well so far. like I said above - companies don't care about people as much as the bottom line. if big companies didn't already get tax breaks (like mine does from Suffolk Co), they wouldn't be able to hire as many people.

I agree that we, at a global society, need to move towards renewable energy sources. But what do we do in the interim? Should almost 1/2 the country give up electricity until a clean alternative is cost effective? How do we promote, as a nation, the research and development of clean, renewable energy sources? Who do you think invests in such? The coal industry is the industry that found ways to reduce sulfur, nitrogen oxides, and other impurities from coal. They have found more effective ways of cleaning coal before it leaves the mine, and coal companies look for low-sulfur coal to mine. If that industry is bankrupted, who is doing the research and development? Who is providing the services that coal generates now that the industry is gone?
The technology exists for us all to heat our homes and power our homes using clean, renewable energy sources but it's cost prohibitive at the moment. There is a sarah wrap type of material that can be wrapped around our homes that will provide 100% of heat and energy for the home but it costs too much to produce right now. We need industry to develop this research. Industry that we may not like now but they will develop it because the market place for their current product is shrinking.
In more then one of my taxation classes, it's been said that when the US Gov't wants someone or an industry to do something, they give tax incentive. That means tax cuts and credit for developing the things that we, as a nation, want to see. So, if we don't give "big" business tax incentives for creating alternative, taxing them instead, who is going to be able to create and produce alternatives?

Thanks for attempting to change my opinion on a candidate...it is too bad I voted last week. All of these last minute efforts to sway me for McCain or Obama are futile.
I live in NC where one woman is saying the other woman is "g-dless". This is an ugly campaign and I cannot wait for it to be over at 7:30pm today!

I saw this on BBC. Libby Dole has lost her damn mind!
anywho, getting back to the original topic...Obama already stated he was FOR clean coal technology.
and getting back to the original post about LYING...NOTHING...I repeat NOTHING in what he says in that interview undercuts that.
to my ears, he was speaking of people using coal with the emissions they NOW emit, NOT the clean coal emissions (which would be LESS costly b/c they would be EMITTING LESS, and the bankruptcy scare being MOOT in that instance)
think about the industrial revolution...at the time MANY people lost jobs they've had for centuries.
NEW technology has ALWAYS caused the old ways to go by the wayside (and cost people jobs) BUT NEW technology paved the way for NEW jobs.
I honestly cannot believe some of the stuff I am reading. I guess in desperation intelligence and rational thought can go by the wayside too.

Where in this statement does he differentiate between current coal emissions and clean coal emissions?
Obama explained that under his cap-and-trade scheme he plans for fighting so-called global warming: “if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.
The way I am reading it is that he is referring to any emission of greenhouse gas.
Secondly, the industrial revolution was caused by industry and innovation - not taxes. We will continue to see markets change, disappear and a come into being. Our grandparents would have laughed at paying for water in a bottle when they were our age.
I don't know who this statement is referring to "I honestly cannot believe some of the stuff I am reading. I guess in desperation intelligence and rational thought can go by the wayside too. " but just because someone interprets another's intent in a statement different then yours, does not mean their intelligence and rational has gone to the wayside.

first of all, I didn't read that. I LISTENED to what the man ACTUALLY said.
I didn't say HE differentiated anything.. I said *I* hear him as speaking in terms of the cost of EMISSIONS. and what a NEW *coal burning* plant would emit (I am taking the ABSENSE of the term clean coal to mean that he is speaking of coal burning as it stands NOW). especially in light of where he stands on clean coal.
you can read it and interpret it however you like.

I don't understand the point of this statement. I am comparing the WHAT of the era, NOT the why. Our grandparents DO laugh at a lot of the things in our era and they WELL SHOULD. but taking KNOWLEDGE about the destruction of our PLANET and using that knowledge to slow or stop it is NOT something that should be chalked up as another TAX.

I would agreee wholeheartedly. and I don't say that every opinion that dissents from mine is void of intelligence or rational thought.
I am speaking to the comments that are completely irrational. sorry if that was unclear.

Yep, Libby is trying to convice the NC peeps that Kay Hagan is "g-dless" because people down here love g-d. I have seen the commercial and the rebutal, so sad.
Now back to the original topic, I promise.

What I posted was a quote from the article of Obama. I don't see where he differentiates between coal and clean coal which still will have greenhouse gas emissions but I will listen to the interview and hear for myself.

why can't we demand the CEO's use their multimillion dollar BONUSES to clean up their companies and SAVE people's JOBS.
I mean really? the President has to take responsibility for every thing the country does...WHY NOT CEO's for their companies???? that is their JOB.

Re: Obama caught in a lie! Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry AFTER he said he was "all for clean coal techonology"
I seriously doubt that Obama or any other politician has the intent of bankrupting and putting out of buisness the coal industry in a year or two. The goal is to put more money into developing alternatives, while weaning off our dependence of fossil fuels. Will jobs be lost? Yes, that is inevitable. But there will be new jobs with the development of the new sources. Not all these jobs will require advanced degrees. There will still be people who need to do maintenance, people who need to clean these facilities or work on some sort of assembly of the technology that is developed. There will be many blue-collar jobs to fill the voids of the lost jobs in industries like coal mining.
It is scary for people who are currently in these jobs that they may not have job security, but who does these days? The truth is that coal burning, and the use of oil and other fossil fuels is destroying our planet very rapidly. We DO have to worry about the future NOW, otherwise there will be no future.

"dirty" coal will be taxed out the whaazz and the fines will bankrupt companies.
clean coal, on the other hand, will burn cleaner, have less fines...no bankruptcy...good for people and for environ.

I honestly don't know what the bonuses are for coal companies. But unless there is some motivation to get to a certain place - with business it the bottom line - they aren't going there on their own.
I think we both want to get to the same place but don't agree on the avenue to get there. I think tax incentives to create cleaner energy, along with tax liabilities that violate EPA standards, need to be in place.

I think this sums up how everyone feels about this election.
I don't think there is really much that actually divides us, the WE of we the people, besides approach.
I can tell you for certain that I don't want ANYONE to lose a job without the prospect of another one. I would NEVER want a family to go hungry.
but I think it's terrible that we simply allow businesses to cut people before they look at their owned fattened coffers.
to me, a ceo or president, is the same as a captain of his ship.
the LAST to leave the sinking vessel. making sure his CREW is taken care of first.
that doesn't happen in business and it should. I think places would be run MUCH tighter if that was the case.

Guess what everybody?
IT'S ELECTION DAY, DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?????????????
It means that we can stop theorizing, bashing, arguing, sniping, snarking, grasping at straws, looking under rocks, pulling blogs out of our butts....
BECAUSE IF YOU VOTED TODAY, YOU HAD YOUR SAY AND THERE'S NOTHING MORE YOU, I, NOR ANYONE ELSE ON THIS SITE CAN DO TO CHANGE THAT.
No article is going to change my vote. No last-ditch attempts to discredit McCain or Obama are going to affect me. It is out of my hands. I pray Obama wins, but if he doesn't, I can't change that. And if McCain doesn't win, there's nothing his supporters can do to change it. It's about free-will. If you voted today, there's no reason to keep going on and on over things like this--articles, blogs, lies...If you followed the campaigns and politics, you have nothing to argue about anymore....It's out of your hands. Now it's up to everyone else in the country who chooses to vote to do so, and let it be.
Off my soapbox now

Re: Obama caught in a lie! Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry AFTER he said he was "all for clean coal techonology"
this is not just an election day discussion does that mean after election day people dont discuss politics??
people have been bashing Bush for years - election day or not
Republicans bashed Clinton; whether it was election day or not
people DO discuss politics outside of November

Aaaaahhhh, I was waiting to see your response. I was just trying to clear the air. Yes, people talk politics all the time, but given the amount of threads based on politics, I was just trying to clear the air, tell people to take a break, because at this very moment, there's nothing more we can do once we voted. We're in limbo. So why keep arguing about it?

Re: Obama caught in a lie! Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry AFTER he said he was "all for clean coal techonology"
As someone who relocated to west virginia this frightens me. Our state thrives on the coal indusrty and many companies are working on clean burn technology coals etc. Although there is no coal mining in my area because I'm closer to washington d.c then coal mining areas our state relies on it. There are so many jobs and so many people here who support their families on it. It turns my stomach when I hear things like this because there are somany hard working people here who rely on that.
