Oil Contract vs COD Oil and a separate contract
I'm debating whether or not to dump Perillo and just get an independant oil contract and buy my oil COD. My burner is about 12 years old and works fine but it does need maintenance occasionally.
All I know is I don't want to spend $2.64/gal on oil.
Any advice is appreciated.
Overall I'm happy with the level of service with Perillo but I would like to "bank" that extra money. It could be about $800/yr savings. That would be cool, but I don't want to trade money for unnecessary problems.

my dad works for a major oil company and he told me to stick with a company that gives you a contract. have them deliver 100 gallons or so at the higher price then fill with 100 gallons of COD.

I've done COD for years and love it. All oil companies get their oil from the same fill station so there is no difference in grade. I've had a separate contract and never had a problem with anyone showing up when needed.

that's an interesting concept. It definitely will save money. But will the oil company give me the same lock rate if I only ask for 100 gallons? Can you tell me which oil co your dad works for? You can FM if you want. I understand if you would rather not say.

Does anyone have any companys that give a service contract with no obligation to buy oil. I contacted a place already - Honesty Fuels. I would not reccommed them. Any other ones out there that serve Nassau County.

We have the original burner in our house but will be replacing it come the spring. We are taking a gamble by not getting a service contract but I refuse to pay such a high price for oil when I have been getting it for $2.05 a gallon from the place at work.
In my opinion, the service contract is amazing to have especially if something happens in the middle of the night but then again, the $$ is a big thing

We did that last year. Our burner was over 50 years old and we just took a gamble that we wouldn't have any problems. We did COD and paid SO much less than the big oil companies wanted to lock us in at. Luckily, we had no burner issues!

can you renegotiate your oil contract with Perillo? oil price per gallon is WAY down from even 2 months ago. it seems unfair that you would paying summer prices.
call Perillo and ask, you never know.

We were debating between COD and a contract as well. Our burner isnt too old either and we probably won't need servicing but I was too scared to risk it, so we did a one year contract w/ Slomins. They had the lowest price for companies that service our area.
We locked in at $2.39/gallon and if we pay our bill within the first 10days of receiving it we only have to pay $2.35/gal. The servicing cost is $99/year.
You could also do COD first, fill up your tank, save some $$ that way, and then lock into a contrat with a oil co.

I've already been with Perillo for the last 4 years and have a contract with them. There is no termination fee for them but if I filled COD they would know it and they may terminate my contract. I'm sure there are some restrictions like that. I would have to check my contract.
Would a Ronkonkoma based oil company deliver to Bethpage. I think there are some county line restrictions on them.
My neighbor drives an oil truck during the winter, I may ask him about it.

if there is no penalty to terminate your contract, can you cancel it and then re-negotiate? it's worth a call to ask.

 how can they charge you $2.89 a gallon now?? price per barrel is under $50. that's BS! I would call some other companies like Slomin's and see what you can get.

I called Nordica Fuels, they don't deliver to Nassau County or service in Nassau County. I'm in Farmingdale.

soeey! It was the best deal I found. What I did was go to Switchboard.com and type in oil delivery then just start calling and asking what their COD price is and how much for a contract

if that's the case, I would definitely get COD oil and buy the contract separately. you would still save so much $$!

I Did, the lowest price I found was $2.59.
2.89 is a lock rate where it can't go above that if oil goes higher but it can go down. $2.64 is locked if oil goes up or down. 5 cents is not enough to switch companies. I didn't lock my rate yet as I was waiting for oil to go down some. I put a call in today to talk to them and see what the price is.

Perillo will cancel my contract if I get COD oil in between. They said I could lock at $2.69 and that's the highest it will go if I lock in it. If it goes down, say tomorrow's price is $2.59 I get the lower price but it won't go any higher. So that's a fair deal I think. I called around to a few others in Nassau..it's about the same.

Ok so I found out that there is no cancelation fee for early termination of my contract. I spoke to another sales person and got $2.47 locked. I did the math and reviewed some COD oil prices locally and service contracts separately and found that some don't have oil tank coverage. If I have a leak, they will replace my tank at no charge. This is big since I have a very old tank. It came to the same as Petro with the additional oil contract.
Slomins wanted 5 cents more.
I think I did ok.
Thanks to all for helping me with this. I got a good education and ended up with a fair price.

3 or 4 years ago there was an article in Newsday about all the COD customers in a panic because they were having trouble getting delivery when there were some shortages in heating oil. They stated that the contract customers were getting the deliveries as a priority and alot of the COD customers were finding that they couldn't get oil. Just one more think to consider. Burst pipes and the resulting damage cost a lot more to fix than the $400 - $800 you might save.

I am currently with Slomins, and like many people, who posted their experiences with their customer service and technicians, I am disappointed too. I am interseted on participating in a COD payment also. However, I also wanted the safety of a service contract for my burner. Who do you use to service your burner. Thanks you.
