I have been swishing with a tablespoon of coconut oil for about a week for 20 mins, has anyone done this too? So far I think my teeth are whiter and my psoriasis is a little better. Maybe its all in my head

Re: oil pulling
I have been wondering about oil pulling for awhile!? What happens if you have fillings? Can you still do it?

oil pulling
this is what I read... Oil pulling is an age-old remedy that uses natural substances to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. It has the added effect of whitening teeth naturally and evidence even shows that it is beneficial in improving gums and removing harmful bacteria!
The basic idea is that oil is swished in the mouth for a short time each day and that this action helps improve oral health. Just as with Oil Cleansing for the skin, the principle of “like dissolves like” applies, as oil is able to cut through plaque and remove toxins without disturbing the teeth or gums.
I have a mouth full of fillings I dont think anything happend to them

Interesting. Never heard of it. So you melt down coconut oil and swish it in your mouth? For how long?

I melt about a tablespoon and swish for 20 minutes, and spit it out in the garbage, I read if you spit it down the drain is solidifies and hurts your pipes

Wow. 20 minutes is a long time no? I feel like I'd swallow it or something!

Re: oil pulling
My DH has been doing this for about 2 years but he uses safflower oil. He swears by it but I just can't get into it, it makes me gag just to think about swishing around oil in my mouth for 20 minutes.

In the summer and when it's warm it is liquid. It's an oil with a ton of saturated fat so it solidifies in cold weather or if you keep it cool. Reminds me of Crisco. I guess that's why they say not to spit it out in the sink. It would totally harden in your pipes.

Be careful if you have fillings, a while back I read this loosens them.

Yup, I do it all the time and love it ! I do it with organic, extra Virgin coconut oil. I use the Trader Joes brand.

Re: oil pulling
I wanted to do this until I read to swoosh for at least 20 minutes.
There would be no way I could last that long without opening my mouth and getting oil everywhere; or swallowing.

FYI you CANNOT swallow it. Or you'll be swallowing bacteria and can get sick. Do not spit out down drain, it will clog pipes. Spit in garage. You can do for 10-15m if you can't make it to 20m.
Theory is a healthy mouth let's your body heal other remedies so it isn't working overtime on the mouth. You can do any oil, but coconut is a lot nicer than seasme oil or vegetable oil.

Re: oil pulling
See! I knew 20 minutes sounded insanely long to be swishing something in your mouth!
The one caveat is that extended periods of swishing that are commonly recommended (10-20 minutes) are likely not necessary and further present a risk of lipoid pneumonia from accidentally breathing in small amounts of oil.

... which is why I don't trust Dr. Oz. Some of his stuff is OK, some of it is total garbage, and some of it is whoever paid him to endorse his stuff. Just like any other salesman.
If you can't fully trust someone shilling stuff on TV (and it didn't take much time to research the facts on this), how can you tell what else is true or not?
